Gavi, one of northern Italy’s most bracing white wines, is usually a hand sell. One of Piemonte’s most distinctive whites, it has achieved limited popularity with those who really like a dry wine. The grape is called Cortese and refers to the village of Gavi around which many of the vineyards lie. Gavi is never neutral nor boring. It has a sharp, characterful flavor appreciated alongside seafood at the nearby Ligurian coastline.
2014 Gavi, Broglia, Il Doge $16 srp
Pale, but brilliant, yellow color. Brisk, penetrating lemon-lime nose. Aspects of springtime greens, new mown hay and hazelnuts inhabit the bouquet. A smooth mouth entry combines citric flavors with peach and an almost saline finish. Mouth-cleansing and bright, it’s a perfect match for shellfish, lighter-bodied broiled fish or a simple veal cutlet. Drink now-2018.
