“The Abstract Truth” – Thursday – June 5 – In partnership with the Art of Cool Festival, Pleiades Gallery presents a visual art exhibit for lovers of jazz, soul, funk and R&B.

“Purple Rain” – Thursday, 7pm – In tribute to the legendary musician, The Carolina Theatre is offering a free screening of Prince’s 1984 box-office hit. Tickets will be issued free of charge beginning at 2pm.

“42nd Street” – Thursday, 7:30pm; Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 2pm and 8pm; Sunday 1pm and 6:30pm – Dance on down to he Durham Performing Arts Center for this show featuring some of the greatest songs ever written for Broadway.

Art of Cool Festival – Friday – Sunday – Stretching over three days, five venues and 20 performances — including five-time GRAMMY winner Terence Blanchard, Brandee Younger, drummer Kendrick Scott and soul band The Internet — the third year of this jazz music festival presented by nonprofit Art of Cool Project promises to be epic.

Official Art of Cool Day Party – Friday, 2-6pm – Join K97.5’s Mir.I.am as she hosts the free official kick-off Day Party for the Art of Cool Festival at the Museum of Durham History.

Blues on the Plaza – Friday, 6:30-9pm – Northgate Mall hosts its second of five outdoor blues concerts featuring The Beauty Operators, so grab your lawn chairs and don’t miss this all-female band sing the blues while you sip on wine and/or beer from Bull City Burger and Brewery.

Terence Blanchard – Friday, 8pm – As a part of the Art of Cool Festival, the multiple GRAMMY-winning trumpeter and composer is joined by his new quintet, The E-Collective, at The Carolina Theatre. Blanchard has defied genres with critically acclaimed success throughout his career, and his newest album, “Breathless,” explores a new realm of jazz fused with suggestions of R&B, blues and funk.

Mother’s Day Picnic – Saturday, 9am-2pm – Enjoy a beautiful afternoon picnic at Blue Whistler Farm in Bahama, celebrating mom while enjoying great food like BBQ Blue Whistler chicken and rabbit. Plus play a round of corn hole! There’ll be plenty of gifts for mom, including Soy candles, farm-crafted soaps and lotions, and plenty of meat and eggs.

CPSC Strawberry Festival – Saturday, 9am-4pm – Support the Central Park School for Children with live music, delicious treats (strawberries aplenty, of course!), face painting, a 5K and Fun Run, and so much more!

Fourth Annual Spring Crafts Show – Saturday, 10am-4pm – Thirteen artists exhibit their work at White Oak Pottery, including ceramics, woodworking, basketry, jewelry, painting and mixed media; there will also be refreshments, open studio and a raffle.

Derby Day at the Inn – Saturday, 10:30am-6:45pm – Pull out your Derby-worthy hats and gloves for brunch, afternoon tea or dinner at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club, where you can sip your cocktails while watching the 142nd Annual Kentucky Derby grand celebration.

Jam for the Kans – Saturday, noon-4pm – Ponysaurus Brewing Company hosts a knockout tournament to raise money for early detection of breast cancer. Come for a live DJ starting at noon and prizes from KanJam, Ponysaurus and Runaway Clothing.

Patchwork Market – Saturday, noon-4pm – Peruse a wide selection of both handmade and high-quality goods as local artisans and vintage collectors join together at Fullsteam Brewery.

Green Home Tour – Saturday and Sunday, noon-5pm – Look through 24 certified green, new and remodeled Triangle homes with this free, self-guided tour.

National Homebrew Day – Saturday, noon – Celebrate and learn how to make beer! Sample homebrews, participate in brewing demos and a cornhole contest, and enjoy pies from East Durham Pie Company and hot dogs!

UNEXPOSED Film Festival – Saturday, noon-11:45pm – The UNEXPOSED Film Festival features three bands, three film screenings, one 16mm film workshop, food catered by The Pit and beer provided by Bull City Burger and Brewery.

Pops in the Park Concert – Saturday, 5-7pm – The Durham Symphony continues its concert series celebrating classic and familiar American music with selections from “West Side Story” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever” in Trinity Park.

America, America – Saturday, 6pm – Join Lien Truong for an artist talk to celebrate the opening of her exhibit, which examines the history of colonialism and conflict in America, at The Carrack Modern Art.

Mom’s and Grad’s Brunch – Saturday and Sunday, 10am-2pm – Chef Josh Munchel is serving up an à la carte brunch at Counting House at 21c Museum Hotel, featuring dishes like Carolina smoked trout benedict and lamb & eggs with spiced tomato gravy and grilled pita.

Mother’s Day Yoga with Art – Sunday, 9:30am – Stretch your horizons at 21c Museum Hotel’s weekly Sunday series. Flex those creative muscles as you work through a variety of poses.

Mother’s Day Brunch – Sunday, 10:30am-2pm – Delight the most important woman in your life with creations by chef Jason Cunningham at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club with dishes such as shrimp and grits, Chesapeake lump crabcake and smoked salmon.

Mother’s Day Brunch – Sunday, 10:30am-2pm – The Durham Hotel hosts a two-course meal with family-style pastries, fresh local fruit, Durham bacon and Counter Culture coffee. Then come back for an encore performance of Dusk til Durham: Jazz, Hip Hop and Sunsets with The Beast from 5:30-8pm.

Mother’s Day Brunch – Sunday, 11:30am-2:30pm – Celebrate mom with a brunch buffet.

Cat and Rabbit Adoption Event – Sunday, 2-3:30pm – The Animal Protection Society of Durham hosts its monthly cat and rabbit adoption event at The Regulator Bookshop.

A Surprise from the Classical Period – Sunday, 3pm – Gather at The Carolina Theatre to listen to the sounds of The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle as they perform symphonies from Cartellieri, Mozart and Beethoven.

Mother’s Day at The Boot – Sunday, 5-9pm – Treat mom to a four-course prix-fixe menu with a wine special.
