Just when you thought it was safe – winter rears its ugly head. Although cold weather is no prerogative to enjoying a glass of Port, the chill in the air and a warm fireplace certainly invite it. Today’s selection is an old favorite. When we “welcome” our 1,400 Halloween trick-or-treaters, this is the bottle I often open. Graham began making Port in 1820, and its reputation for quality as well as consistency make it a go-to estate. Graham’s 10-year Tawny bridges the great divide of sweetness tempered by the richness of extended wood aging. It makes you think more of smoothness and comfort rather than sugar. Remember, a bottle of this will keep for four to six weeks once opened. I keep one handy in the fridge at all times!
Graham’s 10-Year-Old Tawny Port (750 ml.) $36 srp
A rich tawny color. (What else?) The bouquet suggests caramel, molasses, honey and fennel. The 10 years really brings these separate elements together into an homogenous whole. Flavors are lightly sweet and nutty, with a rounded texture that lingers just long enough. Cheeses, nuts and stone fruits enhance the experience and marry perfectly with it.
