March-The-Federalist-Zin-430x573Today’s wine, the Federalist Zinfandel, (yes, it’s spelled with a small “t”) is one of those overt, joyful reds that really says U.S.A.! Although I’m late for July 4, think of this as a paean to the often rustic, brambly charms of American Zin. The fruit comes from Lodi, the very warm region of California where Zinfandel can flourish; aged for 12 months in 25% new oak, it screams fulsome yet balanced flavors. Although it isn’t bone dry, your grilled foods will be thankful for this luscious mouthful.

2013 the Federalist Zinfandel, Lodi $22 srp*

Deep purple color. A red berry, cherry, plum and cinnamon nose that grabs your sinuses and doesn’t let go. These heady aromas urge you on. Dense, brambly fruit flavors with a dense mouth feel and soft, balanced finish. I’d chill this slightly (a half hour in the fridge) for summer grilling. Carries its 14.9% alcohol very well. Drink now in the great outdoors!
