A Small Batch of Babka

A Durham-based artisan food product is hitting the shelves at Southern Season and LoMo Market. Small Batch Baking Company‘s specialty babka, a type of Eastern European yeast cake, is now being sold at both retailers in addition to its original delivery-only service.

Also based in New Hampshire, Small Batch Baking Company opened in Durham just over eight months ago and has been cooking up mail-order, bite-size pastries ever since.

Co-owner Sheryl Blackwell describes her specialty as “a snack-sized treat with loads of flavor that satisfies taste buds in two or three bites. It’s the perfect accompaniment to morning coffee, as an alternative to a cookie with milk, or on its own as a post-dinner treat.”

Sheryl’s babka is a smaller rendition of the traditional Eastern European pastry. Where traditional babka comes as a large loaf, the Small Batch version is a tiny, 4-oz. snack.

Currently, Small Batch Baking Company offers babka in four flavors, including traditional chocolate, chocolate cappuccino, blueberry cinnamon and chocolate raspberry. The bakery is planning on debuting several other flavors later this year.

Pick up a pack at their new distribution locations, or order directly to your house through Papa Spud’s farm-to-fork delivery.
