Seems as though everyone and her cousin makes a rosé these days. Remember when “rosé” meant Anjou or Tavel? And let’s not forget Mateus, for the older crowd! But Spain had made delicious ones for years, and today’s offering is especially recommended to those red wine drinkers who want a dry, flavorful pink.
2014 Viña Real Rosado, Rioja $14 srp
Pale, salmon color. Strawberry and watermelon highlights with a touch of citric punch and fresh turned soil inhabit the engaging bouquet. Remarkably smooth on the palate, with fresh berry flavors and just enough acidity to refresh. But it’s dry and delicate — not the least bit fruity in a “sweetness” sense. There’s a wonderful sappy texture on the finish that almost reminds one of grape skins. A red wine lover’s rosé. (85% Viura, 15% Tempranillo.) Drink now.
