For the Bold

imagesDiversity is in the news these days and I for one have found that the wines of Martinelli Vineyards are always their own selves — wines with an authoritative stamp. This winery has fashioned an enviable reputation for vivid, glamorous wines that see minimal manipulation and fine expression.  Those familiar with their Jackass Hill Zinfandels are aware of the “take no prisoners” styling. Their Bella Vigna series is sourced from various vineyard sites in the Russian River Valley. The newly released 2013 Pinot Noir explodes in the glass, and you know that you’re drinking an upfront expression of true individuality and diversity.

2013 Martinelli Bella Vigna Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley $40 srp

Translucent color, veering towards ruby. A thick nose of black cherry with floral elements, strong tea and smoke. Inviting. Silky, juicy mouth texture with chocolate cherry, earth and licorice notes. Sappy and extracted, this has fine length on medium tannins. To me, more of a winter wine; but if you’re in the mood for bold — drink away. Now-2017.  (780 cases made.)
