castello-di-pomino-benefizio-bianco-frescobaldiThe story behind Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi’s Pomino Bianco is certainly intriguing. Introduced in 1855, Chardonnay cuttings were first planted in Tuscany  upon the Castello di Pomino estate of Frescobaldi ancestor Vittorio degli Albizi. Located on one of the regions highest spots, (about 2,200 feet) the grape thrives at the property and grows to a golden color. The Benefizio Riserva is its single-vineyard top bottling. It has been barrique barrel-aged since 1973.

2012 Pomino Benefizio Riserva, Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi $33 srp

Golden yellow with bronze burnishing. Exotic, overt and sexy nose of very ripe apple and pineapple, surrounded by notes of butterscotch, marshmallow, newly sawn oak and grassy, wind-swept elements. Impressive and slightly decadent! Flavors are soft in texture with a medium body and a long caressing aftertaste including pear, honey, butter and caramel notes. I think this is best enjoyed as an accompaniment to a good book and a tray of soft cheeses and cashews. A true character and feast for all the senses. Drink now-2017.
