Ribera Del Duero is an important, mountainous wine district in north-central Spain. Bodegas Emilio Moro, founded in 2007, is aiming for the stars with an intensely modern approach to the venerable Tempranillo grape. With prices from $15-$150, you’re in for a treat at all price points. Today’s wine, the Cepa 21 (not the “Hito”), is a mouth-filling example that will be most welcome in the cold months ahead.
2011 Cepa 21, Tempranillo, Ribera Del Duero $25 srp
Brooding, dark purple color with slight lightening rim. Heavenly deep nose of melted black cherry fruit, with elements of licorice, cedar, violets and smoke. The expansive bouquet still manages to be invigorating. Soul-satisfying mouth texture with chocolate-covered plummy fruit surrounded by vanilla accents and mountain herbs. A long, lingering aftertaste will please big-boned wine aficionados. Drink with hearty winter dishes now-2019.
