
“Harvest” – through November 18 – Visit Pleiades Gallery to catch its newest exhibition of contemporary local art, a collection by mixed-media artist Gray Griffin. Admission is free, and Pleiades is open Thursday-Sunday.

DJ Listening Party – Thursday, 6pm – Join The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University for a musical celebration of its “Southern Accent” exhibition. Local DJs spin records inspired by the art, including Brendan Greaves and Harrison Haynes, co-curators of the Southern Accent Music Library, as well as Max Brzezinski and Jason Perlmutter of Carolina Soul Records and Mac McCaughan, co-founder of Merge Records and member of Superchunk.
David Flink – Thursday, 6:30-8pm – What does it mean to be a “different thinker”? Where can we find the full potential of our community? How can we make strides toward creating a world in which every learner is recognized? By sharing some of his own LD/ADHD journeys, Flink provides answers to these questions. In doing so, he also provides a glimpse into the power of mentoring in the lives of different thinkers. At the core is a message of personal empowerment, academic success and educational revolution for people who think differently. Presented by and at The Hill Center as a part of Community Education Series.
Darrell Scott – Thursday, 7pm – Presented by Drop-D Ranch and The Carolina Theatre, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter performs tunes from his “Couchville Sessions” album at The Blue Note Grill. Molly McGinn & Dave Willis will open at 7pm, and Scott’s performance will follow at 8pm.
Jennifer Brulé – Thursday, 7pm – Author of “Learn to Cook 25 Southern Classics 3 Ways,” TV chef Jennifer Brulé will be at The Regulator Bookshop signing copies of her cookbook as well as a huge bowl of her “Kryptonite Pimento Cheese,” which will be served with crackers and wine.
Music Documentary Night: Danny Says – Thursday, 8pm – Motorco Music Hall hosts a screening of “Danny Says,” a documentary on the life and times of Danny Fields.
Gaspard&Dancers – Thursday and Friday, 8pm – The dance company returns to Reynolds Industries Theater for another exciting season of dance by Gaspard Louis, with special guest appearances by Ronald West’s company, Black Irish and Justin Tornow. The season features the world premieres of Gaspard’s new work, “Portrait,” inspired by the paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat and “Forbidden,” a virtuosic duet.
The Civilians: “The Undertaking” – Thursday, 8pm; Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 3pm and 8pm – The Civilians, an investigative theater troupe, presents their newest play, “The Undertaking,” at Sheafer Lab Theater. The play is a creative investigation of one of the great cultural taboos: death.
“A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay about the Death of Walt Disney” – Thursday-Saturday, 8:15pm – Manbites Dog Theater presents a show that tells the story of Walt Disney’s last days on Earth, peeking into the mind of a world-class visionary, artist, businessman and narcissist.
Eyes Up Here Comedy – Thursday, 8:30pm – The Pinhook hosts an all-female comedy showcase featuring Maddie Wiener, Shari Diaz, Jes Bolduc, Laura Crawford, Brett Williams, Purdy Holsum and Lauren Faber.
Music on the Plaza with The Beauty Operators – Friday, 6:30-9pm – Enjoy Durham’s all-female blues-rock party band, The Beauty Operators, and grab a bite from local food truck Heavenly Smoke at Northgate Mall. The concert is free, and it’s likely to fill up quickly; bring your lawn chairs and come early for the best seats!
Patrick Phillips – Friday, 7pm – The award-winning poet, translator and professor discusses his new book “Blood at the Root: A Racial Cleansing in America” at The Regulator Bookshop. The book tells the story of Phillips’ hometown – Forsyth County, Georgia – in order to present the bigger picture of America’s deep-rooted pattern of racial violence.
Brett Harris – Friday, 8:30-11:30pm – The Durhamite and indie-pop singer performs at Duke Coffeehouse along with Hectorina, a post-soul band from Charlotte, and The Wyrms, a psych-punk band from Carrboro.
Simone Dinnerstein – Friday, 8pm – Performing an exhilarating mixture of both classic and modern pieces on the piano by alternating between Schubert and Philip Glass, experience her show at Baldwin Auditorium.
Dasan Ahanu with Live Band – Friday, 8pm and 10pm – Head to Beyu Caffe for a spoken word performance by Dasan Ahanu, who will be accompanied by a live jazz band.
Astronomy Series – Dark Skies: Deep Space – Friday, 8:30-10:30pm – Durham Parks and Recreation and NCCU sponsor this star-gazing event at Valley Springs Park. Knowledgeable staff will be present and equipment will be provided. The event is free and all ages are welcome. In case of cloud cover on Friday the event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 1.
Growing up in the ’90s: The Best of ’90s Hip-Hop and R&B – Friday, 9pm-2am – DJ Lonnie B & Mad Skillz spin hip-hop and R&B hits from the decade at Motorco Music Hall.
DisABLE the Label – Saturday, 11am-2pm – Celebrate Disability Awareness Month on the Holton Athletic Field at the Holton Career & Resource Center. Admission to the celebration is free; enjoy food, performances, giveaways, children’s games/activities and much more. The event is rain or shine, and all are welcome!
Bookmobile Saturday – Saturday, 12:30-2pm – Books, DVDs, and more will be available for both adults and children at Destination Literacy in the Durham County Library Bookmobile, which will be parked on The Plaza at Northgate Mall.
Discovery Nook – Saturday, 12:30-2:30pm – Bring your kids ages 4 and older to Durham County Library‘s Discovery Nook at Northgate Mall to learn about animal tracks and meet live animals that may be hiding in your own backyard. Each session begins with a Zumba warm-up led by Janet Levy.
Varipop – Saturday, 2pm-1am – The Shed and Spectre Arts present a one-day festival featuring 13 bands and solo performers along with food trucks, local beer and coffee. The main event is outdoors at Spectre Arts from 2-11pm, followed by an afterparty at The Shed Jazz Club from 11pm-1am.
Love and Liberation: A History of LGBTQ + Durham – Saturday, 5-7pm – Head to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church at for Durham County Library‘s launch of a new web exhibit for their LGBTQ collection. The event is free, and there will be a vegetarian spaghetti dinner for all who register in advance.
Bull City Block Party – Saturday, 5-10pm – Presented by NC Fresh Catch, this “pop-up” seafood and music festival at Durham Central Park features main stage performers Wahya’s, The Wigg Report and Matt Phillips & The Philharmonic feat. Al Strong and Zoocru. Fresh local seafood will be served by NC Fresh Catch. Boricua Soul Food Truck and other delicious options will be available, as well as local beer and cider courtesy of Fullsteam and Bull City Ciderworks. The event is rain or shine.
Nikeita Crichlow – Saturday, 8pm and 10pm – The talented vocalist and composer, recently featured on Boney James’ album “Futuresoul,” performs at Beyu Caffe.
Durham College Fair – Sunday, 1pm-3pm – Visit Northgate Mall to meet representatives of colleges and universities from across the country. Students and parents can find two- or four-year schools as well as both public and private options. The college fair is free and open to all, and is a great opportunity to learn about financial assistance and student life.
Flash Chorus – Sunday, 1pm – Flash Chorus welcomes anybody who has always wanted to express themselves through music, but hasn’t had an outlet to do so. Head to Motorco Music Hall to sing and record music videos, too!
Beer & Hymns – Sunday, 7:30-9:30pm – Fullsteam Brewery plays host to this community sing led by Jesse James DeConto of the local band The Pinkerton Raid. All are welcome regardless of spiritual inclination or lack thereof, and the event will of course be accompanied by fresh, local beer.
Russian Circles – Sunday, 8pm – See the metal band live at Motorco Music Hall.
