Pop América, 1965-1975 – Thursday-July 21 – The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University presents the first exhibition with a hemispheric vision of Pop art’s engaging imagery, highlighting the significant contributions of Latin American and Latino/a artists. The exhibit makes a timely and critical contribution to a more complete understanding of this artistic period and features nearly 100 works by artists connecting Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and the United States. Free programs and events, including an opening talk by guest curator and Duke Professor Esther Gabara on Thursday, complement the exhibition.

AfterHours: Science of Wine ’19 – Thursday, 6:30-10pm – Enjoy an evening of fine wine featuring local vendors while learning about the science behind your favorite varieties at the Museum of Life and Science. All guests will receive an event wine glass.

Casablanca Wine Dinner – Thursday, 7-10pm – Go back in time and experience one of the most iconic love stories with a romantic wine dinner at The Wine Feed. The night features a four-course Moroccan meal and wine pairings.

Dirty White Matter – Thursday, 7-9pm – Join a community discussion confronting whiteness and white femininity at The Carrack. There will be guided art exercises and recorded interviews featuring women of color. Everyone is welcome to participate.

The Piano Guys – Thursday, 7:30pm – The four-member internet sensation returns to DPAC, putting their own spin on pop music with classical instruments that’ll surely bring joy to your ears.

Johnny Cash at San Quentin: Johnny Folsom 4 & Friends – Thursday, 8pm – The Carolina Theatre pays tribute to the legendary Man in Black with a 50th anniversary recreation of the singer’s iconic performance at San Quentin. Tribute band Johnny Folsom 4 takes on the roles of key players from that unforgettable night.

Eric Hirsh – Thursday, 8-10:30pm – The Durham-based jazz pianist and his quartet performs at Arcana as part of a year-long residency. He challenges himself to write new music or perform a new cover each month.

Little Green Pig Presents: Horses – Thursday, 8pm; Friday, 7pm – Influenced by Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen and others, Dee Dee Marx brings her poetic, introspective hits to The Pinhook with a free show.

Ruby Friday | The Least of These: Personal Icons Made Public – Friday, noon-1pm – At the Rubenstein Arts Center Ruby Lounge, visual artist William Paul Thomas speaks about the connections and distinctions between his three ongoing projects: “Cyanosis,” “Bricks Need Mortar” and “TEEF.” His works focus on the people and experiences closest to him.

Dogs Make a Difference: Fashion Show – Friday, 6-10pm – Join Yadid’it Dog Training for a night of furry friends and fashion at ReCity Network. Partners for Youth Opportunity students will walk down the runway alongside foster dogs.

Beatrice Rana, Piano – Friday, 8pm – The esteemed Italian pianist performs for the first time in North Carolina at Baldwin Auditorium as part of Duke Performances’ piano recital series. Listen to her masterfully play Chopin’s “Études, op. 25,” Ravel’s “Miroirs” and Stravinsky’s “The Firebird.”

‘Rock of Ages’ – Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 2pm and 8pm – The global Broadway phenomenon returns to DPAC after a nearly sold-out run in 2011. Featuring music from hit bands like Styx and Poison, the musical tells the story of a small town girl and big city rocker chasing after their dreams in 1980s Hollywood.

‘A Need Fulfilled’ – Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 8pm; Sunday, 3pm – Experience the heroic true story of black nurses in World War II in an all-new play written and directed by NCCU professor Arthur M. Reese at NCCU Farrison-Newton Communications Building.

Embodied Learning Summit: Yoga in the Era of #MeToo – Saturday, 9am-4pm – The fifth annual daylong conference explores the use of yoga and mindfulness practices to address issues relating to sexual violence and the #MeToo movement at Duke University’s Ark Dance Studio. The summit, which aims to provide a safe space for survivors, features keynote speaker Zabie Yamasaki, a yoga practitioner and survivor.

Traditional Japanese Tea Gatherings: First Voice of Spring – Saturday, 10:45am-12:15pm and 1-2:15pm – Experience and gain a deeper understanding of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony in the warmth of Sarah P. Duke Gardens teahouse in the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum.

NC Pride Songwriter’s Showcase – Saturday, 4-10pm – Enjoy a chill night filled with performances from local talent, plus games, food and beer at Durty Bull Brewing Company.

Inside Studio Real: A Choreopoetic Sitcom – Saturday, 4pm and 7:30pm – Watch it all unfold in Black Poetry Theatre’s latest production at the Hayti Heritage Center. When creatives are hired to be cast members on a popular radio program, things suddenly become real as they break out in song, dance and poetry, reflecting the dramatic episodic absurdity of the production.

Lobby Call: Seeing Science Fair – Saturday, 5-8pm – Immerse yourself in the wonders of science with interactive exhibits and experiments at The Durham Hotel. The free fair features exhibits ranging from bees to owl pellet dissection to magnets to space.

RnB and Paint ‘Lost In Love’ Tour – Saturday, 7-9:30pm – Destress and let your creativity flow on to your canvas at The Wedding Exchange. As you paint your next masterpiece, enjoy live rhythm and blues performances.

‘Peace of Clay’ – Saturday, 7:30pm – NC Theatre and Theatre Raleigh collaborate on an all-new play meditating on an African-American lower-working-class family in pursuit of the American dream in the 1980s at Living Arts Collective.

Steven Isserlis, Cello & Robert Levin, Fortepiano – Saturday, 8pm – As part of Duke Performances’ chamber art series, the distinguished cellist and pianist collaborate for an inspiring performance of three Beethoven sonatas and a set of variations at Baldwin Auditorium

Wedding & Events Showcase – Sunday, 1-4pm – Find inspiration and ideas for your special occasion at The Rickhouse. Learn more about vendors firsthand, and enjoy wine tastings and food samples.

DukeCreate: Screen Printing – Sunday, 2-4pm – Learn the basics of screen printing, such as screen preparation and ink mixing, as part of the free arts workshop series at the Duke Arts Annex

Wild Kratts LIVE 2.0 – Sunday, 1pm and 4:30pm – Dive into a classic Wild Kratts adventure with the Kratt brothers, Martin and Chris, as they combine live action and animation on stage with the rest of the Wild Kratts team on screen at DPAC. An exciting and inspiring quest awaits the young and young at heart as the brothers “activate creature power” and share their animal knowledge with the audience.

Mike Doughty Plays Soul Coughing’s ‘Ruby Vroom’ 25th Anniversary Tour – Sunday, 8pm – The singer-songwriter and founder of rock band Soul Coughing performs the band’s debut album in its entirety to celebrate its 25th anniversary at Motorco Music Hall. Jam out as Mike and his backing band remix the original tracks, creating a whole new experience for fans of the album.

Oscars Viewing Party – Sunday, 8-11pm – Watch your favorite movie stars take home the prestigious golden statuette for their award-winning performances at Ponysaurus Brewing. As you cheer and complain over the winners, enjoy pita pockets, sweet treats and beer.
