Roald Dahl’s ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ – Thursday, 7:30pm; Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 2pm and 8pm; and Sunday, 1pm and 6:30pm – Roald Dahl’s popular story comes to DPAC, bringing with it all the classic songs and scenes from the movie, as well as a brand new score from the songwriters of ‘Hairspray.’

Valentine’s Day at the Museum – Thursday, 10am-5pm – The Museum of Life and Science spreads the love with a full day of Valentine’s-themed animal enrichment activities. There will also be materials to create special valentines for family, friends or your favorite museum animal.

Hayti Heritage Film Festival 2019 – Thursday, 10am – Saturday, 10pm – Support new and veteran artists while enjoying delicious food and beverages at Hayti Heritage Center for the 25th anniversary of its festival celebrating Southern black films. Tickets are $50 and include access to all screenings and the opening night reception.

Love at First Spice – Thursday, 5-11pm – Spice things up with a hot sauce and salsa swap hosted at Fullsteam Brewery. If you’re single, sign up to take part in Mettlesome‘s live dating show.

Valentine’s Day Flight Night – Thursday, 6-10pm – Stop by The Parlour for flower-inspired ice cream for one night only. Vegan options will also be available!

Valentine’s Day at the Nasher Museum Cafe – Thursday, 5-9pm – The cafe has put together a special menu for couples who prefer to dine as well as digest art featured in the museum’s galleries.

Multi-Sensory Highlights Tour – Thursday, 6-7pm – Visit the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University for a unique tour of ancient America that will excite all your senses, not just your sight, and with Mexican chocolate – because, you know, Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day Double Feature – Thursday, 7-11pm – Love to laugh? You’ll love an evening watching two classic romcoms, “When Harry Met Sally” and “The Wedding Singer,” back to back at Ponysaurus Brewing, which will provide a variety of fun snacks and beverages, including hot mulled wine and Soomsoom Pita Pockets!

‘Minding the Gap’ – Full Frame Road Show Winter Series – Thursday, 7:30-9:10pm – The Carolina Theatre hosts a showing of award-winning director Bing Liu’s latest film, “Minding the Gap.” Take part in this introspective look on a group of young men’s journey through adulthood.

PHK is for Covers//NC Women’s Prison Books Project Fundraiser – Thursday, 8pm – Jam out to covers from a few great ’90s bands at The Pinhook. While you’re there, show some love and donate to support the NC Women’s Prison Books Project.

Stew & the Negro Problem Notes of a Native Song – Thursday-Saturday, 8pm; Sunday 7pm – Experience James Baldwin’s essay collection, “Notes of a Native Son” through a mixture of rock, jazz and soul at the Rubinstein Arts Center/Von Der Heyden Studio Theater in this Duke Performances event.

Champagne & Dessert Tasting with Moët Hennessy – Thursday, 8-10pm – Celebrate Valentine’s with a variety of sparkling Champagnes paired with Chef Oscar Gnapi’s desserts at Unscripted Durham.

Goth Prom: Dark Alternative Dance Party – Thursday, 9am-1am – Arcana and 20th Century Boy invite those with the blackest hearts to a dark dance featuring cocktails and Tarot readings. Admission is $5. Wear your best blacks and reds!

Strawberry Bubbly Weekend! – Friday, 3-7pm; Saturday, 1-6pm; Sunday, 1-5pm – Honeygirl Meadery is throwing a Valentine’s Day celebration with strawberry cocktails and fresh berries. Don’t wait! Their strawberry-flavored drinks will only be available this weekend.

Vert & Vogue: Happy Hour – Friday, 5:30-6:30pm – Drinks are on Vert & Vogue at their Happy Hour featuring leader of the Global B Corp Academic Network, Jessica Yinka Thomas. Anyone interested in discussing business and the positive impact of B Corps in North Carolina is welcome to join.

Durham Authors Discuss African-American History – Friday, 6-8pm – The Museum of Durham History celebrates Black History Month by hosting a discussion with Dr. Jerry Gershenhorn, author of “Louis Austin and the Carolina Times: A Life in the Long Black Freedom Struggle,” and Dr. Andre Vann, author of “African Americans in Durham County.” There will be an opportunity to ask questions, purchase books and author signings after the discussion.

‘It’s Complicated’ Opening Reception and Performances – Friday, 6-9pm – Join 20 artists and storytellers as they explore the vulnerability of love and intimacy through various art forms at The Carrack. Exhibit runs through March 3.

‘Maps’ Curated by Marcella D Camara – Friday, 6-10pm – This free Third Friday Durham gallery opening highlights self-exploration, using clues left for us by our ancestors and the natural world. This exhibition will include art from Gouled Ahmed, Alexandria-Destinee Gonzalez Bauza, DeCario Allen and Clarissa Thompson.

Susana Baca – Friday, 8pm – The Carolina Theatre hosts a performance by Susana Baca, a powerful figure in the Afro-Peruvian revival and Peru’s first black female minister of culture. She dances and sing with the accompaniment of her band, playing traditional Peruvian instruments.

DJ MASEO of De La Soul, Rapper Big Pooh & Fin The DJ – Friday, 9pm-2am – Kompleks Creative presents their “Post Valentine’s Day Hangover” at Motorco Music Hall. Shake off the lovey-dovey stupor while getting down to all the best funk, soul and hip-hop hits of the recent decades.

Tinkering Series: Drones 101– Saturday, 10am and 12:30pm – Learn to fly with an introductory workshop on drone use at the Museum of Life + Science. Develop your skills by maneuvering through an obstacle course and start your path as a drone pilot!

Love is Dogs, Beer, Donuts and Gosling/Stone – Saturday, noon-10pm – Barley Labs knows that love comes in many forms. That’s why they are hosting an assortment of activities ranging from beer/cider and donut pairings with Duck Donuts, a dog massage fundraiser for the Carolina Boxer Rescue and a showing of the 2011 romcom, “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”

Indulge Catering Presents: A Taste of Love – A Night of Indulgence 2019 – Saturday, 6:30-10pm – Indulge in an intimate evening of fine dining with that special someone at The Cookery. Delight in a lavish three-course menu and dessert plate for two. Tickets will not be sold at the door, so buy online soon!

The Monti Presents the 11th Annual Hippo Awards – Saturday, 8pm – Honor the latest and greatest personal storytellers from the Southeast. The Carolina Theatre hosts this exciting award show – this year’s theme is Risky Business.

Party Illegal presents Detroit’s Sinistarr with Oliver Long, DJ Jules and Treee City – Saturday, 9pm-2am – The Pinhook hosts the return of Party Illegal with a night of irresistible musical talent! Tickets are $10 at the door.

Champagne & Chicharron – Saturday, 10pm-2am – Marking their two-year anniversary, The Mamis & the Papis invite everyone to share the love and listen to the music of their hearts at Arcana.

Third Annual Chili Cook-Off – Sunday, noon-3:30pm – Heat things up at Ponysaurus Brewing – try a wide range of chili from local cooks, enjoy freshly brewed coffee from Counter Culture or take part in deciding this year’s People’s Choice Award winner for the best chili!

An Homage to Handel – Sunday, 3pm – St. Stephens Episcopal Church hosts this concert dedicated to the famous composer at The Carolina Theatre.

An Evening with André Leon Talley: Movie Screening and Q&A – Sunday, 7-10pm – Famed fashion journalist and Durham native, Andrè Leon Talley, returns home for a screening of director Kate Novack’s film “The Gospel According to André” at Hillside High School. The film highlights the life and journey of André during the Jim Crow era and how he became such an influential member of the fashion world. 

February Singalong – Sunday, 7:30-9:30pm – Durham County Beer & Hymns kicks off their next community singalong, sponsored by Fullsteam Brewery and Duke Chapel. Sing and drink local beer to support Communities in Partnership.

Demetri Martin: Wandering Mind Tour – Sunday, 8pm – Hot off the success of his latest Netflix special, “The Overthinker,” the award-winning comedian brings his tour to The Carolina Theatre for a night of witty humor, meet-and-greets and photo ops!
