
Art for a New Understanding: Native Voices, 1950s to Now – Thursday, 5:30-9pm – This major new exhibit at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University charts the development of contemporary indigenous art in the United States and Canada.
Paint Nite: Daisies Cheer Wine Glasses – Thursday, 7pm – Enjoy dinner and drinks at this two-hour painting class at Carolina Ale House. Participants will receive step-by-step instructions as they create their painting.
THE PROPOSAL – A Full Frame Road Show Series – Thursday, 7-8:30pm – Hosted by the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, come watch this film that’s focused on the life and art of Luis Barragán, directed by Jill Magid, at the Full Frame Theater.
Karaoke – Thursday, 8pm-1am – Let loose and sing your heart out at The Bar. This LGBTQ-friendly evening prides itself on its inclusivity.
Tasting at Ten – Friday, 10-11am – Have a cup of joe at Counter Culture Coffee at this free coffee tasting. Counter Culture Coffee will guide participants through their curated coffees that feature unique brewing methods. Participants can also go on a tour through Durham Roastery after the tasting.
Our Bull City: Exhibits From The Community – Through next Tuesday – This six-week-long pop-up exhibit at the Museum of Durham History was made to commemorate the city’s sesquicentennial. This exhibit was made possible by the City of Durham, NC Government, the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation and the Jenny Semans Koortbojian Trust.
The Carrack’s Final Community Show – Friday – September 21 – This free art exhibit at The Carrack is the gallery’s last exhibition. The opening reception will be Friday, September 6, with a closing reception on Friday, September 20. Come out for the last chance to see local artists featured at The Carrack.
Free Wine Tasting – Friday, 5-7pm – Come to Bulldega for tastings of four unique wines!
Durham Dogs and Durham Bulls – Friday, 6-9:30pm – Hosted by The Animal Protection Society of Durham, come visit and enjoy the company of dogs in addition to learning more information about APS and volunteer opportunities at the Durham Bulls game.
The Ethics of Now: Tommy Orange – Friday, 7-8:30pm – A series of conversations among historian Adriane Lentz Smith and artists in the community, this event at the Durham Arts Council will be focused on ethical dilemmas facing these artists.
Open Mic Stand-Up Comedy – Friday, 8pm – Express your inner comedian at The Taproom at Durty Bull.
Appetites & Desires – Friday, 8-10pm – This summer-long audio festival Audio Under the Stars has its final show of the 2019 season this weekend at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Explore how human needs, both physical and emotional, bring us together and, at times, pit us against each other, with stories about food, hunger, ambition and passion. Bring a picnic and a blanket. Dang Good Dogs will be selling hot dogs, veggies dogs and more.
Ephemeral Ft. Green Velvet – Friday, 9pm-2am – Dance your heart out to electronic music at this immersive party experience at The Fruit.
Durham Labor Day Car, Truck, & Bike Show – Saturday, 8am-3pm – This event at at Fellowship Baptist Church will feature more than 100 trophies, top 50 old cars, top 25 new cars, top five motorcycles and 25 special awards for the 13th year.
Durham Roots Farmers Market – Saturday, 9am-noon – Shop the booths of farmers in our area at the Durham Roots Farmers Market in Brightleaf Square. There will also be farmers featured from Orange, Person and Granville Counties.
Bull City Rumble – Saturday, 9am-9pm – The state’s largest vintage motorcycle and scooter show, hosted by Ton Up NC – a small, nonprofit group that promotes the riding, restoration and racing of vintage motorcycles – is back for its 15th year downtown. Free to the public, come see the sights and sounds of vintage scooters and motorcycles with other bike enthusiasts.
Mimosa and Design Paint Party – Saturday, 5-7pm – An art class, take-home canvas and three mimosa tasting tickets, this party is also a fundraiser for Saniya Rochelle who is working toward becoming the Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Miss Jabberwock.
Saturday Night Fever – Saturday, 9pm-1am – Express yourself through dance at Triangle Dance Studio, which teaches participants dance styles such as Lindy/East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Ballroom, Blues/Fusion and Tango.
Sunday Funday at Pour – Sunday, noon – Enjoy games, food and drinks at Pour Taproom – kids eat free all day.
Durham Food Truck Rodeo – Sunday, noon-4pm – Eat at more than 40 food trucks and enjoy live entertainment at this free event in Durham Central Park. Ragweed Brass will perform their jazz, blues and folk music, and nonprofit partner TROSA will host 1994 Throwback Trivia, corn hole, and a photo op cutout to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
Reggae on the Rooftop – Sunday, noon-5pm – Rock out to tunes by DJ Algoriddim and Selector B Steady on the Pool Patio Lounge as summer comes to a close.
Comedy City Tour – Sunday, 1-3pm – Join Bull City Laughs during its 90-minute-long bus tour accompanied by live comedians explaining the history of downtown. Discover where to drink like a local and the best restaurants. This event is rated R, and passengers must be at least 21.
The Beat Market at Locopops – Sunday, 1-5pm – View local art and listen to local music at this event, hosted by Durham Beat and Locopops. Featured vendors include Bull City Baubles, Killdeer Pottery, VaMere Jewelry and Dirty Consumer. – Compiled by Jess Bennett
