Weekend at a Glance: Earth Day, Eco Faire and Entertainment

Hosted by hosted by Durham Parks & Rec, Durham Earth Day features music, food, hands-on environmental education activities and more at Durham Central Park this Sunday.

DPS Art Exhibit Opening – Through April 30 – Artwork by Durham Public Schools middle and high school students will be on display at Northgate Mall starting this Friday and will last through the end of the month. Organized by the DPS K-12 arts education director and art teachers, the display will feature art panels with drawings, paintings, pastels, prints, collages, photographs and other medium from art projects completed during the 2017-2018 academic year for each school.

Larry Burk – Thursday, 7pm – Join the co-author of “Dreams That Can Save Your Life: Early Warning Signs of Cancer and Other Diseases” at The Regulator Bookshop as he discuesses his new book, which explores a spiritual source of healing and inner guidance for health and well-being as it introduces dream journaling and interpretation techniques.

The Decemberists – Thursday, 8pm – Performing at the Durham Performing Arts Center, this Portland, Oregon-based band has just released their eighth studio album, I’ll Be Your Girl. Exploring new sounds, this band embraces influences from Roxy Music and New Order to showcase creative music for their audiences.

Great Peacock – Thursday, 9pm – Head to Motorco Music Hall to see this folk band perform music ranging from roosty, down-home Americana to super-sized arena pop/rock. Also making an appearance is South Carolina-based band The Artisanals performing their indie rock tunes.

Kidcycle Public Sale – Thursday & Sunday, noon; Friday, 10am; Saturday, 11am – Returning to Northgate Mall, Diaper Bank of North Carolina hosts its twice-annual Kidcycle event offering gently used children’s apparel, shoes, maternity wear, baby equipment, toys and books. Diaper donations are welcome and the money raised will support the DBNC.

Sacred Mandala Studio – Friday, noon – Stop by this newly opened tattoo studio and art gallery for their art show and opening event. Making an appearance is Durham-based screen printer and designer, Raj Bunnag, and in-house artists Alan Lott and Brian Parrillo. There will be a collaboration drop with Runaway in-store; complimentary beverages and snacks will be offered starting at 6pm.

TinkerTech Family Workshop – Friday, 1pm; Saturday, 10am and 1pm – Bring the kiddos to experience this hands-on workshop experimenting with solar science. Using LEDs, Tinkerers will build a solar panel, explore solar power generators, develop UV detectors and use SunPrint to create artwork.

DIY Fest – Friday, 5pm; Saturday, 10am – Show your support for the continued growth of The Scrap Exchange by joining them in celebrating Earth Day weekend. The event kicks off on Friday with an official ribbon cutting of their new Scrap Thrift store and ends on Saturday with an Eco Faire featuring kids’ activities, live demonstrations, handmade items, environmental presentations, music, fun and more.

Happy Hour – Friday, 5:30pm – Join Vert & Vogue as they host the Triangle B Corp community with special guest Sandi Kronick, CEO of Eastern Carolina Organics. To celebrate Earth Day, Sandi will talk about her views on sustainable agriculture in North Carolina and what it means to be a B Corp.

Photography Show – Friday, 6pm – Attend the Third Friday reception of The Carrack’s Long Exposure: a pinhole photography show, featuring the work of Gregg Kemp. Explore his work and discover other pinhole and long-exposure photographers, while taking part in workshops to build a camera and experiencing developing and taking pinhole pictures. Workshops are $10.

Third Friday – Friday, 6-9pm – Liberty Arts features the work of Tricia Weiner, Delores J Hayes and Kimberly Foytlin.

Building Bridges through Good Faith – Friday, 6pm – The Museum of Durham History highlights the Ar-Razzaq Islamic Center’s contributions to Durham in the opening of their newest exhibit. Enjoy first-person accounts, photos and artifacts from the stories of the people in the Ar-Razzaq community. This free and public event will offer homemade food samplings, children’s activities and live music.

Spectacle 2018 – Friday, 7:30pm – The spring benefit for the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University features live music from Phil Cook and friends and a no-frills meal plus NC raw oysters from Chef Andrea Reusing. VIP ticket holders can arrive early for a cocktail party with artist John Akomfrah and DJ Mac McCaughan of Superchunk at the Rubenstein Arts Center.

The Sound of Music – Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 2pm and 8pm; Sunday, 1pm and 6:30pm – This brand new production comes to DPAC. The spirited, romantic and beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family will surely thrill with its Tony-, Grammy- and Academy Award-winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss” and the title track.

Che Apalache – Friday, 8:30pm – This four-man string band from Buenos Aires performs a unique blend of Latin American and Appalachian tunes at The Bullpen complete with the sounds of the fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin. For every draft pint purchased, The Bullpen donates $1 to Music Maker Relief Foundation to help support and sustain American roots musicians.

Electronics Recycling & Paper Shredding Event – Saturday, 8am – Get a head start in spring cleaning by stopping by Durham County Memorial Stadium for a free electronics recycling and paper shredding event. The event is hosted by the City’s Solid Waste Management Department and is free and open to the public.

Art Market Celebration – Saturday, 9am – Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Art Market at Vega Metals. This family-friendly event will feature arts, crafts, music, kid activities, food trucks and a red carpet fashion show.

Sidewalk Sale – Saturday, 10am – Take a walk down Ninth Street for a day of local shopping. Find sales and specials at Blue Corn Cafe, Cozy, Happymess Art Studios, HunkyDory Durham and many more.

Student Playathon – Saturday, 10am – Listen to free performances by Triangle-area music students every half hour at Northgate Mall‘s Dress Barn Court in support of Durham Music Teachers Association.

Open Studio Sale – Saturday, 11am-5pm – Arrive at Liberty Arts for a day of art demos and entertainment with demonstrations in glassblowing, letterpress printing, jewlsmithing and metalsmithing. Food from Route Bistro and Lumpy’s Ice Cream will be available, as well as craft beers and ciders from Ponysaurus Brewing and Bull City Ciderworks.

Classical Concert – Saturday, 3pm – This free concert by the Durham Symphony takes place at the Emily K Center and features music from “Star Wars” and well-known classics as well as the premiere of N.C. composer Noah Balamucki’s new piece, with special guests from Kidznotes.

Roy Roberts – Saturday, 8:30pm – The Greensboro-based musician is the link between Memphis Soul and contemporary blues. He’s first and foremost a guitarist, having honed his chops backing soul singer Solomon Burke, Dee Clark, Eddie Floyd, and others. Catch him at The Bullpen, where, as always, a portion of your tab goes to Music Maker Relief Foundation to help support American roots music by directly partnering with the artists who make it.

JOINT: An Experimental Warehouse Party – Saturday, 9pm – Experience a collaboration from the STL and DURM music communities. Coming to Durham Fruit & Produce Co. are sick beats with intense energy as artist 18andcounting brings in the Kullus and Hubble crews for an electronic, rap and house music mixture.

Honey & Mead – Sunday, noon – This adult workshop starts at the Durham County Cooperative Extension’s Teaching Kitchen for a honey demonstration, and the workshop will end at Honeygirl Meadery, where guests can enjoy some free mead samples along with a tour of the facility.

Earth Day Festival – Sunday, noon– Go green and take part in a day filled with entertainment, hands-on environmental education workshops, sustainability vendors and more. Check out awesome live music, swing by the Family Fun Zone and show your appreciation for Mother Earth! Bring the whole family out to Durham Central Park.

Mini-Mural Contest – Sunday, 2-5pm – Bull City Ciderworks, together with Mural Durham, Artstigators and Duke Arts, are throwing a Durham-themed live painting party on Earth Day. Visitors to the taproom will receive a ticket to vote on their favorite mural, which the artist will be painting live. Plus, food trucks, Shiloh Hill’s live music and more.

Kitten Shower – Sunday, 2:30pm – Join Animal Protection Society of Durham as they share their love for the kitten foster program. Learn about the responsibilities of fostering and the program from APS Veterinarian Dr. Kay Bishop and her medical team. Donations of kitten supplies are welcome to fill up the APS’s “kitten corral.”

“I Told My Soul to Sing” – Sunday, 3pm – Join First Presbyterian Church for a concert celebrating Emily Dickinson. Listen to Lesley Curtis, soprano, Deborah Coclanis on piano and Ann Harrison for an afternoon of readings and musical settings based on the poems by Emily Dickinson.
