Discover the Wild Flavors of this Tuscan Cabernet

Castello d’Abola is one of the most scenic and “elevated” estates in Tuscany. Thirty minutes from Siena, their ancient vineyards are situated between 1,150-2,150 feet above sea level. (That’s high up in these parts.) Today’s wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon/Sangiovese blend that aims for the fences. It is called “Acciaiolo;” roll that off your tongue! (Ah-chy-OH-lo). It represents the Zonin family’s efforts to craft an internationally styled wine whose blend varies from vintage to vintage. This one is quite the imposing mouthful, Cabernet-focused and breathtakingly powerful.

2013 Acciaiolo, Castello d’Albola $67 srp

Dense ruby/garnet in color. An extremely ripe nose of blackberry, black currant and tart cherry with a panorama of assisting elements. One finds fresh herbs, tea, tobacco, smoke and even a touch of green pepper in the bouquet. Flavors are full-bodied yet firmly structured, with concentrated cassis, cherry and dark berry. There’s a “wildness” in the flavors that is quite impressive. Elements of pepper, cocoa and caramel lead to the long, powerful finish. Very boisterous now (try it with a Sirloin steak), or can easily be aged for a number of years. Decant! (70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese) Drink now-2024.
