The Thoroughbred of Cabernets

HopeValleyBottleShop_BannerSPEC113959_2Haras de Pirque is a Mendoza (Chile) winery with the highest aspirations; and their partnership with Italian, no longer wünderkind, Piero Antinori, has produced superb results. Their smoky, earthy Syrahs are fascinating in their novelty, and the other emphasis on distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon is also producing unique, affordable wines. The “Hussonet” Cabernet Sauvignon, named after a thoroughbred horse that is owner’s Eduardo Matte’s original passion, can only be described as an original; a fascinating wine like no other Cabernet in my repertoire, that delivers a wallop of quality at a most affordable price. Gallop over to try this!

2011 Cabernet Gran Reserva, Hussonet, Harras De Pirque $15 srp

Deep garnet, crimson hue. An “original” bouquet of blackberry compote with elements of roasted earth, mountain herbs, tobacco, mint and something that reminds me of coca cola!  Velvety, ripe and concentrated flavors feature blackcurrant, herbal and tarry qualities with a peppery, lively and lengthy finish. The Syrah element enhances the round texture and grandeur of this wine. Memorable, unsubtle and delicious. (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah) Drink now-2020.

91/100 points (Could get ever better with cellaring! Great value)
