Regular readers may know I have a soft spot for Vermentino, the Italian white. This grape thrives on Sardinia but also other Italian spots, namely Sicily and the Tuscan coast. That’s where today’s example is from. It’s Calasole Vermentino from the Rocca Di Montemassi estate. Vermentino must be fully ripened to show off its complexity and versatility – and today’s example, from 2016, oozes just that. From the seaside region of Maremma, it’s a wine that will bring a smile to your lips and a burst of flavor to your palate. A fine value as well.
2016 Vermentino “Calasole” Rocca Di Montemassi $15 srp
A light, brilliant golden color. A bracing nose of honeyed lemon peel and grapefruit accentuates its ripeness and highlights the intensity. Extremely inviting and invigorating. Flavors are crisp, cutting and super clean. Stone fruits meld with citrus to create an exhilarating flavor. With a very dry and brisk aftertaste, it’s a perfect thirst quencher for those 90-degree days at the beach. Try with the daily catch, ceviche, or an almond and herb couscous salad. Drink now.
