Each week we share – through pictures – what the folks behind Durham Mag have been doing around town. We’re always out and about, just because we love this place; we hope you’ll comment with what you’ve been doing, too!
Mad Hatter’s Cafe & Bakeshop
Operations Assistant Caroline Kornegay was charmed by these sweet snowmen cupcakes at Mad Hatter’s.
Gocciolina
VP of Content Andrea Griffith Cash dined at the always incredible Gocciolina. Did you know they’ll be at the Grand TASTE Experience at the Durham Armory in April? Tickets are going fast; take advantage of our early bird special at tastetheevent.com.
Durham Distillery
Creative Director Kevin Brown‘s wife, Carrie, visited Durham Distillery on a girl’s day out and brought back the wonderful gift of their Conniption gin and Mocha liqueur.
Parker & Otis + Rose’s Meat Market & Sweet Shop
Senior Associate Editor Amanda MacLaren spent part of her day off exploring Brightleaf Square; she treated herself to a vanilla latte from Parker & Otis and a gingerbread ice cream man from Rose’s Meat Market & Sweet Shop — perfect on a warm December day!
American Tobacco Tower Lighting
Several of our staff members enjoyed the seasonal tradition of watching the American Tobacco Tower Lighting at the beginning of December. We encourage you to take a stroll through the campus and take in the beautiful setting — it’s sure to put you in the holiday spirit!
American Tobacco Tower Lighting
No Durham water tower lighting would be complete without a couple of toy soldiers on stilts!
Tree of Bikes
New this holiday season at American Tobacco Campus is the Tree of Bikes! The 25-foot-tall sculpture is made entirely of new bikes – about 120 – that will eventually go to children living in affordable housing. It will be on display on the Burt’s Bees patio through Friday, Dec. 18.
The Umstead Hotel
Andrea enjoyed a holiday reception at the always warm and welcoming Umstead.
Voyager’s Second Annual Gingerbread House Auction
Voyager Academy‘s high school culinary arts classes have created one-of-a-kind gingerbread houses as a fundraiser for their program. All the houses are up for online auction and on display in the elementary school lobby until Dec. 17. Proceeds will benefit the implementation of a new ProStart culinary program for the 2016-17 school year and fund any equipment required to support the classes. Place your bids here.
Foster’s Market
Last weekend’s beautiful weather meant that Assistant Editor Jessica Stringer had to enjoy her grits bowl and latte outside at Foster’s Market. Bonus: it’s a perfect spot for picking out some last-minute stocking stuffers.
Rise Biscuits & Donuts
Amanda’s go-to Rise biscuit is the BCT: bacon, cheese and tomato. You simply must try it!
Homemade Cookies
Andrea brings in a platter of her homemade cookies every year around the holidays.
OnlyBurger
It’s become a tradition that whenever Amanda and her brother go see a musical at DPAC — in this case, The Sound of Music — that they grab a burger and beer at OnlyBurger first!
Yusuf/Cat Stevens Liked Our PopUp Chorus Tweet!
Elmo’s Diner
You might not think it traditional diner fare, but Amanda loves the spinach enchiladas at Elmo’s!
The Regulator Bookshop
Books always seem to be on wish lists this year, and you can find great titles at The Regulator Bookshop.
Cotton Creek
Join us in welcoming new retail shop Cotton Creek! Co-owners Barbara Stover and Michael Bell are bringing Southern prep and North Carolina- and Durham-focused wares to Ninth Street.
Happy + Hale
And while we’re still on Ninth Street — we can’t wait for Happy + Hale‘s Durham location (plus yoga studio run by Kathy Sell Smith) to open!
Bull City Dental
If you live downtown and you’re looking for a new dentist close by, we recommend checking out Bull City Dental, now open on Parrish Street.
Joe Van Gogh
We’ve got new business in South Durham, too, as Joe Van Gogh‘s Woodcroft location has now opened its doors.
Amante
Some days you just want pizza. On those days, we order Amante.
