Each week, we share – through pictures – what the folks behind Durham Mag have been doing around town. We’re always out and about, just because we love this place; we hope you’ll comment with what you’ve been doing, too!
Luna Rotisserie and Empanadas
VP of Content Andrea Griffith Cash finally tried Luna. A pulled chicken empanada and a roasted eggplant empanada were just what the doctor ordered on a rainy Wednesday. Oh, and the succotash was also spot on.
Canvas on Demand
All of these studies are showing that coloring can relieve stress for adults, and Canvas on Demand sends us a coloring canvas just as we enter our busiest season at work! Serendipity!
Bottle 501

Bottle 501, Durham’s newest bottle shop, celebrated its opening with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce. Located at 3219 Watkins Road, Ste. 200, off 15-501, Bottle 501 offers local, national and international brews and wines. With 16 beers and wines on tap and more than 550 beer bottles available from 20+ countries, guests can enjoy a drink in the shop’s lounge area or make use of the on-site 32-ounce Crowler machine to take their favorite beers home with them in the aluminum alternative to glass growlers.
Rise Biscuits and Donuts
After all the sweets leftover from Halloween made it into our office, we decided to order more biscuits than doughnuts from Rise for our monthly company meeting. But National Doughnut Day dictated that we had to order at least a few — and they did not last long!
Old Havana Sandwich Shop
When you’re craving a Cuban sandwich, there’s only thing for it: Order an El Caney at Old Havana!
Ponysaurus
You can now get your snack on at Ponysaurus! It’s just $1 per scoop for snacks ranging from Swedish fish to cheesy bar mixes to wasabi peanuts and much more! It’s the perfect accompaniment to Sunday football games.
Ponysaurus
More cool news from Ponysaurus — you’ll soon be able to take home your own 4-pack of the brewery’s Biere de Garde in 16-ounce cans!
Carolina Artisan Craft Market
More than 110 contemporary fine craft artists from across North Carolina and country came to display their handcrafted works at Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild‘s three-day Carolina Artisan Craft Market this past weekend.
Guglhupf
If only you could capture the divine scent of the fresh-baked Guglhupf bread that contained Associate Editor Amanda MacLaren‘s chicken BLT in a photo. But alas, you’ll just have to go to the bakery and cafe and get some for yourself!
Monuts Donuts
Living down the street from Monuts can be dangerous. Amanda has had a field day trying all their pumpkin-flavored doughnuts, like this Pumpkin Chai (also great: the Pumpkin Caramel!).
Heavenly Buffaloes
Amanda got her Heavenly Buffaloes wings fix after the Duke vs. UNC game on Saturday. The zesty garlic parmesan sauce can’t be beat!
Sympathy for the Deli
Amanda headed back to Ponysaurus for Sunday brunch with Sympathy for the Deli, which cooked a whole hog and some Firsthand Foods brisket. Amanda went with a pulled pork plate with mac and cheese, collards and a roll.
Nomadic Trading Co.
Have you heard? Nomadic Trading Company is having a sale through the end of December. Blankets for everyone!
