Each week, we share – through pictures – what the folks behind Durham Mag have been doing around town. We’re always out and about, just because we love this place; we hope you’ll comment with what you’ve been doing, too!
National Tequila Day
Friday, July 24, was National Tequila Day. What better place to celebrate than Gonza Tacos y Tequila?! Beautiful patio weather, a top-shelf house margarita and these delicious Nachos Gabachos were the perfect start to the weekend!
Piedmont
Piedmont‘s new Chef Gregory Gettles‘ use of local ingredients and techniques left us both impressed and incredibly full following a Tuesday night dinner. This wild-caught N.C. catfish was flaky and juicy, and the flavors of the lemon Anson Mills’ grits, bacon jam and “basil tea” were the perfect complements. Even the dinnerware is local – this dish was handmade by local potter, Matt Hallyburton.
Chef Gregory Gettles
After dinner, we got the chance to talk to the new chef, whose menu has been in place at Piedmont since early July. We highly recommend his tomato tasting menu!
Goodberry’s
Account Executive Flann McKinnon‘s pups are big fans of Goodberry’s ice cream!
Toast
One of our ideal downtown lunches: Toast‘s grilled chicken panini with a cup of calabrian onion soup.
The Coffee Element
Did you know that The Coffee Element in South Durham offers an assortment of pastries and savory items, all of which are baked in-house and made from scratch by Owner Brian White? (He even cultures his own buttermilk to use in their waffles and scones!)
PickleFest
The Rickhouse was packed with pickle lovers on Saturday during the first PickleFest, which featured the tastiest in fermented foods, live music, local brews and a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar.
Geer Street Garden
By this point, it’s no secret that Associate Editor Amanda MacLaren loves a good grilled cheese. One of her favorites is the grilled pimento cheese at Geer Street Garden.
Oval Park Grille
Creative Director Kevin Brown went all out with Sunday brunch at Oval Park Grille. This hanger steak, eggs and hash dish has the rest of us salivating!
Garden & Gun Durham Coverage
We spied lots of love for Durham in the new issue of Garden & Gun! Saltbox was mentioned for its old-school approach to oysters and they called Scratch’s roasted peanut chess pie “haute and bass and altogether courant.”
Mateo
The best bargain on Mateo’s menu? $18 for a carafe of their Cheerwine sangria.
The Cupcake Bar
Assistant Editor Jessica Stringer and her best friend always try to celebrate their July birthdays together. This year, they rang in another year with The Cupcake Bar’s mini lemon and chocolate coconut cupcakes.
