Carolina Jubilee is a two-day event presented by Carolina Farm Trust – who’s mission is to protect farmland and foster an ecosystem of sustainable farming – that celebrates N.C. food, music and farms.
Proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to farmers, including Blue Whistler Farm, right outside of Durham. They are raising rabbits, which they are selling to restaurants in the Triangle and at farmers’ markets. Currently, they have 20 female rabbits, and they hope to be up to about 50 by winter. With the need to increase production to support the demand from local restaurants and consumers, they are in need of new materials to house the rabbits properly. That’s where the proceeds from Carolina Jubilee will come in.
As the event approaches, we asked Zack Wyatt, founder and executive director of Carolina Farm Trust, a few questions about what to expect for this year’s event.
What are you most looking forward to about Carolina Jubilee?
I’m most excited for all the planning and logistics to come together so we can raise enough money for Carolina Farm Trust to purchase a pasteurization system for Mary L Farm. We want to show our sponsors and all the people that attend the huge impact they can have in the Carolina agriculture community by just buying a ticket, showing up and having fun.
Has anything changed since last year’s event?
Last year we had 11 bands; this year we have 22 bands across different genres. We added a few new vendors, but the overall vibe and feel will be similar to last year. A lot more people are aware of the Jubilee as well, so we hope for much larger turnout this year.
How long have you been planning the 2016 Jubilee?
I started planning Carolina Jubilee 2016 the day after Carolina Jubilee 2015 ended, and I’m sure 2017 planning will start very soon after this year. We have big plans on what Carolina Jubilee can become.
What advice would you give attendees?
Buy your tickets early, relax with us and celebrate the end of summer knowing that you are helping a small dairy farm be able to sell their milk direct to the N.C. public. It is going to be an awesome two days filled with an incredible lineup, Carolina vendors that source from the Carolinas, and an opportunity to be a part of something special.
Carolina Jubilee 2016 will be held September 30 and October 1 at VanHoy Farms in Harmony, NC. For tickets and more information about the event, visit thecarolinajubilee.org.
