We had a blast at Txotxfest at Black Twig Cider House! Assistant Editor Laura Zolman Kirk, Executive Editor Amanda MacLaren and Chapel Hill Magazine Executive Editor Jessica Stringer all attended and had the chance to taste ciders from North Carolina and beyond, as well as culinary pairings from local restaurants such as Watts Grocery, Oval Park Grille, Gocciolina, Picnic, Bona Fide, Durham Catering Co. and Rise. Here, someone yelled “Txotx!” and Jessica caught her 2-ounce pour of cider from the Spanish cider-filled barrel. (Spanish cider isn’t carbonated, so when it shoots out of the barrel, the angle and force are enough that the act of catching the cider in your glass physically adds the desired effervescence to the drink.)
Oh, how we have missed Bull City Ciderworks’ Durham location! But, we hear construction is underway at their 305 S. Roxboro St. location, and they are shooting for an Oct/Nov opening! In the meantime, a cherry tart cider at Txotxfest really hit the spot.
Txotxfest benefits Durham-based nonprofit Inspire MEdia Network, which Chris Rosati founded after receiving an ALS diagnosis. The organization shares inspiring stories – and makes them happen.
Every Sunday, instructor Anna Cordova leads Flow Yoga at Fullsteam Brewery. The donation-based class starts promptly at 10:45am, and is open to all levels. It’s an invigorating way to begin the week!
Ever tried El Chapin? The Guatemalan restaurant that’s tucked into a shopping center near Garrett Road has traditional dishes, pastries and shelves full of products like horchata mix.
The smoked salmon plate at Lucky’s Deli is perfect for sharing. It’s not too heavy, salty or smoky – just a really good, fresh smoked salmon balanced well with pickled tomatoes, toast and capers.
We spy lots of pumpkin beer at Total Wine!
A dinner of rotisserie chicken and mahi-mahi at Counting House was a real treat – what’s more is the complimentary cotton candy that followed the meal.
