Many people shy away from Bordeaux reds because they think they’re overpriced. But the selective work of Daniel Johnnes and Michael Skurnik Imports help bring about the world of affordability. Like anywhere else, there are hits and misses – but today’s wine, from the region of “Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux,” is a delight. 2012 was a troubled vintage, but Merlot fared the best and our wine, Roc du Manoir, features 80% of it. With a pedigree including all-star wine consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt, this blend belies its very plain label. It’s what’s inside that counts!
2012 Chateau Roc du Manoir, Castillon, Côtes de Bordeaux $15 srp
Garnet color with lightening rim. Resonant nose of dark berries and black currants caressed by soft oak underpinning. There’s a windswept, leafy Merlot element in the bouquet, but also an unexpected richness that seductively invites you in. Flavors are smooth, “easy does it” and satisfying with plum, macerated cherry and a rather chocolatey texture. Light-medium bodied, it has a “lift” to it that really refreshes. Soft tannins make this perfect now with poultry, lean beef or a mushroom risotto. Remarkably good for the vintage – and the price. Uncork a couple of hours ahead or decant into another vessel. Drink now-2018.
