The aphorism “A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats” certainly applies to the 2016 vintage in the southern Rhône. This vintage is being assessed as one of the best ever, an almost unheard of level of quality. My own experience with everyday reds and whites affirms this. I urge all of you to seek out these wines that are packed with fruit, yet are supple, fresh and invigorating. Such is the case with today’s example, available locally. It is the Les Dauphins Côtes Du Rhône Reserve white. I’ve drank this before and always had a ho-hum reaction. But in 2016, this blend of native grapes produces a thirst-quencher that will accompany all manner of seafood stylishly.

2016 Les Dauphins Côtes Du Rhône Reserve Blanc $13.99
Deep straw color with golden highlights. Evident ripeness with lemon/lime elements so ripe they seem to border on sweetness, (but they’re not …). Suggestions of quince, banana and freshly cut grass are also evident. Flavors are dry yet brimming with ripe texture. Satiny, clean and refreshing, there’s good grip, starchy tannins and a tangy finish. Not complex but beautifully balanced. (65% grenache, 15% marsanne, 10% clairette and 10% viognier) Drink with salmon, a seafood stew or an herbed chicken dish. Drink now-2020.
