If you’ve never tasted Vermentino, I envy you. That’s because this white is like no other, and I’d love to see your face when you first smell its originality. Grown in Sicily and along the Tuscan coast (Antinori makes a beauty in Bolgheri) I still think those Vermentinos that carry a Sardinian passport remain the best. There is something “windswept” and salt-like about this grape, and the subsequent wine is an ideal thirst quencher. Today’s version is from the small producer Pala. His “i fiori” Vermentino is fermented in steel tanks and bottled after a few months. Mr. Fabio Angius was in our area recently and introduced this new wine to our market.
2015 Vermentino, Pala i fiori, Sardegna $16 SRP
Unique “windswept” freshness on the nose with lemon rind, chalk and salty mineral-laced fruit that is so very inviting. Flavors suggest lime, peach and green apple with a grassy snap and spicy bite to keep it fresh. Nice mouth texture and not bone dry. Drink with all kinds of summer salads and fresh seafood. Drink now.
