I’m not usually a fan of wines with a “theme” attached. You know the kind: “Ooh, La, La,” “Slapshot Syrah” or “Cleavage Creek” — (yes, it really does exist)! Cute doesn’t cut it for me.
But a new red, made by Vietnam vet and “veteran” winemaker Ray Coursen, is all seriousness in a bottle. Enologist and owner of Napa Valley’s Elyse Winery, Coursen has crafted a Merlot-based wine called “Purple Heart.” 7,500 cases of this delightful red will not only please your discerning palate, but help raise money for the Purple Heart Foundation, which raises money for the unmet needs of military men, women and families. It can also help wine lovers re-discover why Napa Valley Merlot got so awfully popular in the 1980s!
2013 Purple Heart, Napa Valley Red Wine $19.99 srp
Translucent ruby red color. A bushel basketful of ripe plums and blackberries. Harmonious, round and soft, this has a surprisingly integrated nose with wilted rose and licorice highlights. Flavors are medium-bodied, seductive and silky with spicy berry fruit and a lip-smacking finish. Delicious now, it could easily age a bit further. (84% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot) A fine value, drink now-2018.
