One always approaches the wines of the Tuscan Frescobaldi estate with anticipation. Has there been a bad bottle from this estate in the last 50 years? Today we celebrate their newest offering, from Frescobaldi’s exceptional property, the Castello Di Nipozzano. It’s located in the Chianti Ruffina zone, producing delicious Chianti and Chianti Riservas. But this new release takes the grapes from its oldest vines to produce a “super riserva,” and I for one am bowled over by its subtlety, finesse and elegance.
2011 Nipozzano Vecchie Viti, Chianti Rufina Riserva, Marchese Di Frescobaldi $27-34 srp
Dark ruby-orange hue at rim. A heavenly perfume of deep cherry, raspberry and violets with overtones of mint, tobacco and leather. The velvety nose still manages to remain fresh and alert despite the considerable layering. Concentrated dried fruits on the palate with elements of licorice, caramel, smoke and graphite on the structured aftertaste. Beautifully rendered, not grippy or sharp, but with room to grow and expand. A superb effort. (90% Sangiovese with 10% Malvasia Nera, Colorino and Canaiolo) Drink now-2022.
