
Summer Sale Pop-Up – Thursday-July 27 – The former Song of Sixpence in Brightleaf Square hosts a three-week summer sale with half off all clothes, jewelry, body care, stationary and fixtures. Song of Sixpence recently merged with Brightleaf Square’s Indio.
Find Waldo Local Scavenger Hunt – Thursday-July 28 – Find Waldo in Durham! The children’s book character from “Where’s Waldo” is hiding in a number of local businesses through the month of July. Free “Waldo Passports,” which list participating stores, will be available for pick-up at The Regulator Bookshop. Find “Waldo” in each store, and get your passport stamped, and then join The Regulator for the “Grand Prize Party” on July 28 at 3pm for a Waldo-themed celebration and the opportunity to win prizes.
‘Paris is Burning’ Viewing Party – Thursday, 6pm – Join The Clearing community group at The Carrack to watch this American documentary highlighting ballroom culture and Black and Latinx trans and queer communities during the 1980s. Free snacks will be provided, and there will be a discussion after the showing.
Summer Indie Noir Series with Eryk Pruitt – Thursday, 7pm – The Regulator Bookshop hosts its second summer indie noir series with Eryk Pruitt, who will be joined by David Nemeth, reviewer for Unlawful Acts, and authors Dana King and Steve Weddle to discuss thrillers and crime fiction.
‘Stranger Things’ Night – Thursday, 7:11pm – The Durham Bulls hosts a Stranger Things-themed evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. When the team takes on the Norfolk Tides, the players will wear specially-designed uniforms while the ballpark will be full of references and promotions based on the popular Netflix sci-fi series.
The Quebe Sisters – Thursday, 8pm – Grace, Sophia and Hulda Quebe of Dallas, Texas, are coming to the Blue Note Grill with their five-piece set to share their unique sounds of western and jazz-influenced swing, country and Texas-style fiddling.
ADF: Rennie Harris Puremovement American Street Dance Theater – Thursday, 8pm – Funk music and street dance of the 1970s is coming to The Carolina Theatre to tell the story of the era’s political turmoil and atmosphere in African American communities.
Read-A-Palooza Summer Learning Block Party – Friday, 4-6pm – Grab a free book and celebrate Summer Learning Week at the W.G. Pearson Center, hosted by Book Harvest. Summer Learning Week (July 8-13) highlights the importance of summer learning and retaining academic progress from the previous school year through access to learning materials.
PLAYlist Concert Series: An Evening with Van Hunt – Friday, 7-9pm – This Grammy-winning musician will be headlining this summer’s free concert series at Durham Central Park. Hunt is known for his collaboration with famous artists like John Legend and was featured on the platinum-selling soundtrack “Love Jones.” LA Weekly called Hunt’s latest album “Popular” a “left-field stunner” for its “trippy fusion of funk grooves, punk guitar, and soul vocals.” Local food trucks and craft beer vendors will start serving patrons an hour before the show.
ADF: Malpaso Dance Company – Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 1pm and 7pm – Maplaso Dance Company is making its ADF debut this weekend at Page Auditorium at Duke University. According to ADF, this Cuban dance company is highly sought after and is expanding its international profile by working with top international choreographers.
Grand Opening Celebration – Saturday, 7am-9pm – Spanglish celebrates the opening of its newest location at City Hall with a prize wheel, music and a special deal for visitors. Join them for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Tomato Day! – Saturday, 9-11am – Join the Durham Farmers’ Market for free samples of a variety of locally grown tomatoes, and vote for your favorite.
DIY Stackable Sterling Silver Rings – Saturday, 3-6pm – Craft your own sterling silver stackable rings at Cecy’s Gallery & Studios, hosted by artist and instructor Tiffany Coley of Tiffany Coley Artisan Jewelry. Students will learn basic jewelry making skills such as shaping and soldering while designing their own sterling silver rings. The class fee is $50, and students must be 14 and older.
FACES Opening Reception – Saturday, 5-7pm – Horse & Buggy Press and Friends is hosting an opening reception for artist Noah Saterstrom’s exhibition FACES: Musicians, Writers, Artists, Activists & Educators, a collection of 48 paintings of “cultural contributors” that are known for their activism or art. The exhibition will be on view through Sept. 29.
Slow Flow + Live Cello – Saturday, 6-7:30pm – Take part in a slow, restorative yoga practice to the tunes of a live cello performance at yoga off east.
Tune In & Wig Out: Drag Pool Party – Sunday, noon-5pm – Take a dip in the pool with the House of Coxx drag queens at Unscripted Durham’s rooftop pool. ADF: Movies by Movers: Student Films – Sunday, 2pm – As part of this year’s American Dance Festival, students in undergraduate and graduate programs will be showcasing their self-made dance films at The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. This event is free and open to the public.
RUMOURS: The Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Show – Sunday, 7pm – Relive the rock and roll magic of Fleetwood Mac with its 11th studio album, “RUMOURS,” at Rhythms Live Music Hall. The show will recreate the band’s legendary persona with period accurate equipment and costumes to spot on characterizations and musical performances.
