
Blues & Brews – Thursday, 6pm – In celebration of its third birthday, Local 22 throws a birthday bash including live music from Tad Walters followed by a late night dance with DJ Craig Layabout.
Voyager: Photography Installation and Talk – Thursday, 7pm, and Friday, 6-8pm – In conjunction with CLICK! Photography festival, Mercury Studio and The Makery host artist Justin Cook, who reflects on his recent trip to the American West and the photos he took during the trip. Thursday will consist of a presentation followed by a reception with Makery vendors on Friday.
Highlights Tour: Home and Place – Thursday, 6pm – Join Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University gallery guide Meg Williams for an exploration of home and place represented in the current exhibitions. Tours last approximately one hour.
Sonya Clark: Gallery Performance – Thursday, 7-8pm – Richmond-based artist Sonya Clark presents her work “Unraveling,” in which she slowly unravels a Confederate battle flag, at Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. Introductory remarks by Duke Assistant Professor Jasmine Nichole Cobb.
Scenes From “Hamilton’s America” Free Screening – Thursday, 7pm – Join UNC-TV at The Carolina Theatre to help kick off the 2016 PBS Arts Fall Festival. Scenes from “Hamilton’s America,” the star-studded documentary that explores two years leading up to the Broadway opening of the award-winning musical from Lin-Manuel Miranda and his colleagues, will play at the theater. Come dressed up in your best Revolutionary attire or as your favorite Founding Father (or Mother) for a chance to win “Hamilton”-related prizes.
Book Release – Thursday, 7pm – The Regulator Bookshop hosts veteran sportswriter Art Chansky in celebration of his new book, “Game Changers: Dean Smith, Charlie Scott and the Era That Transformed a Southern College Town.” In the book, Chansky tells the story of Dean Smith and his recruitment of Charlie Scott, the first African-American scholarship athlete at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Ian Bostridge and Thomas Adès – Thursday, 7pm – Celebrated English tenor Ian Bostridge is joined at Duke Performances by famed composer and pianist Thomas Adès to perform a collaboration of Schubert’s “Winterreise” at Baldwin Auditorium.
Late Night BBQ & Beer w/Picnic & Ponysaurus – Thursday, 9pm-midnight – Every Thursday night in October, The Durham Hotel partners with Picnic’s barbecue man, Wyatt Dickson, and Ponysaurus Brewing to offer late night barbecue sandwiches and beers on the roof in celebration of NC BBQ Revival Oct 29-30 at Green Button Farm. A limited number of sandwiches will be available.
Toni Tipton-Martin – Friday, 6-8pm – The author of the book, “The Jemima Code: Two Centuries of African American Cookbooks” joins Andrea Weigl of the News & Observer for a conversation at The Durham Hotel, which will be accompanied by hors d’oeuvres and a cocktail hour, followed by a book signing.
The Community Weed Wacker Hour – Friday, 6-9pm – Mixed-media artist Chance Murray’s exhibit on the dark, strange and humorous side of life in the South opens at The Scrap Exchange‘s Cameron Gallery. The opening reception includes light snacks, drinks and art creation at the Make N Take Room. The exhibit runs through Nov. 12.
“Durham A-Z: I is for Innovation” Exhibit Party – Friday, 6pm – Celebrate the innovative past of the Bull City at the Museum of Durham History. This exhibit focuses on the contributions Durham made to science and progress over its history. Live music and complimentary refreshments will be provided.
2nd Anniversary Party – Friday, 6-9pm – Honeygirl Meadery celebrates its two years in Durham with music by The Barred Owls from 6-7pm and Donovan Cheatham Trio from 7-9pm. Sip a new fall mead as you get your groove on, and browse raffle prizes featuring new Honeygirl merchandise. Samples of unique test batches will be passed around to get feedback on which ones to add to the regular line-up. $2 of every glass of mead or tasting flight sold at the party will be donated to Bee Downtown.
“Burden” Screening – Friday, 7pm – This documentary, screened at the Full Frame Theater at the American Tobacco Campus, follows ’70s artist Chris Burden and his private life and work. Known for his mesmerizing and stomach-churning work, Burden and his sculptures and installations have captivated audiences for decades.
Trailer Park Boys – Friday, 7:30pm – The Canadian comedic trio of Robb Wells (Ricky), John Paul Tremblay (Julian) and Bubbles (Mike Smith), from the show “Trailer Park Boys,” perform on their “Still Drunk, High and Unemployed” tour at the Durham Performing Arts Center.
The Mavericks – Friday, 8pm – In conjunction with the release of their newest album, “Mono,” which was recorded in mono without relying on stereo tricks of modern recording, the band known for their rhythmic fervor and Latin machismo take the stage at The Carolina Theatre.
5th Annual Eno River Run – Saturday, 9am-noon – A 6- or 11-mile autumn adventure along the trails and through the river at Eno River State Park. The course features technical single track trail, a river crossing on foot and a short section of bouldering along rocks near the river.
Fall Plant Sale – Saturday, 10am-1pm – SEEDS, the North Carolina Botanical Garden and Useful Plants Nursery team up to offer veggies, fruit trees/shrubs and native pollinator plants for sale! The NC Cooperative Extension Service’s Master Gardeners will be on hand to help answer your questions about growing edibles and the pollinator flowers that support the edibles.
Pumpkin Patch Express – Saturday 10am-4pm; Sunday 12:30-4pm – Hop aboard Museum of Life & Science’s train to the museum’s on-site pumpkin patch, where visitors are invited to pick out the perfect pumpkin, run through the hay maze, dive into the corn crib, complete a couple crafts and more!
Make a Difference Day – Saturday, 10am-6pm – In honor of Make a Difference Day – a national movement that connects people with opportunities to serve, increases the strength of communities and promotes civic engagement – Habitat for Humanity of Durham has organized a donation drive in order to ReStock the ReStore just in time for the holiday season.
Mural Durham – Saturday, 1-4pm – Bring family and friends by to see Durham artists in action during an afternoon of local food – including Monuts, Nosh, Locopops and Happy+Hale – music and live graffiti/mural painting at the Duke Arts Annex at 404 Gattis St. Artists include FRANCO, Brenda Miller Holmes, WOEM, Bart Cusick, Victor Knight, Heather Gordon and Sergio Sanchez.
Runaway Fall Release Party – Saturday, 7pm – Durham’s own Runaway debuts its RUNAWAYFA16 collection at Ponysaurus Brewing Co. with performances from Treee City and Chocolate Rice beginning at 8pm, live screen printing by Raj Bunnag of Supergraphic and food from the SoomSoom Pita Pockets food truck. Ponysaurus is also celebrating its one-year anniversary, and they will release their new Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout for the occasion.
Nnenna Freelon and Scott Sawyer – Saturday, 7pm and 9pm – The six-time Grammy Award nominee is joined by the guitarist, whom she’s toured with extensively, at the Sharp 9 Gallery Jazz Club.
“It Was A Dark & Stormy Night, And…” – Saturday, 8pm – The FatMouth improvisation group creates an improvised musical based on suggestions from the audience on how to end the title “It Was A Dark & Stormy Night, And…” at Common Ground Theatre.
South Dakota Chorale: ‘Marcel Tyberg Project: Music Lost in the Holocaust’ – Saturday, 8pm – Under the direction of Brian Schmidt, 24 singers of the Chorale join Duke Chapel’s organist Christopher Jacobson in rescuing Viennese composer Marcel Tyberg’s Two Masses for Choir and Organ and will also perform Austrian refugee Eric Zeisl’s 1945 Requiem Ebraico, the first piece of music written to memorialize the victims of the Holocaust. This highly anticipated concert is one of the first performances of these newly rediscovered works since World War II.
Andrew Mossin – Saturday, 8pm – The Little Corner Poetry Series features the poet at The Shed Jazz Club at Golden Belt. Books will be available for sale courtesy of The Regulator Bookshop.
Oozing Wound – Saturday, 9:30pm (door), 10:30pm (show start) – On tour for their latest album, “Whatever Forever,” the Chicago thrashers bring their high-energy, over-the-top humor and riffs to The Pinhook.
Tilthy Rich Celebration Ride – Sunday, 2pm – Tilthy Rich Compost Service celebrates its fourth birthday at Fullsteam Brewery. In addition to a bike ride to community gardens, the event will have food, beer and prize raffles.
Hardcore Southern Punk Sunday Matinee – Sunday, 2-5pm – The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University presents an afternoon of Southern punk energy expression featuring Pipe, Blackball and Natural Causes, with punk DJs spinning records in between sets. Organized by musician Mac McCaughan, co-founder of Merge Records, member of Superchunk.
Halloween Spooktacular – Sunday, 4-7pm – Join the Durham Symphony Orchestra at Northgate Mall for this family-friendly concert featuring music from Tchaikovsky, John Williams and the Muppets, Paperhand Puppet Intervention and a costume contest.
