Weekend at a Glance: Magic, Music and Mother’s Day

Durham Public Schools Art Show – Thursday–Sunday, through May 23 – Artwork by Durham Public Schools elementary school students will be on display at Northgate Mall through May 23. Organized by the DPS K-12 arts education director and art teachers, the display will feature art panels with drawings, paintings, pastels, prints, collages, photographs and other medium from art projects completed during the 2017-18 academic year for each school.

Celebrating Spring Exhibit – Thursday, 5-8pm – A reception for Horse & Buggy Press and Friends‘ newest exhibit, “Celebrating Spring,” which will feature botanical illustrations by Preston Montague, wildlife photography by Ricky Davis and pottery by Liz Kelly. Durham Street Piano Player aka Tom Merrigan, will delight guests with fine tunes out front.

David Byrne – Thursday, 8pm – The Golden Globe, Grammy and Oscar Award-winning solo musician takes center stage at the Durham Performing Arts Center. With the help of a 12-piece band, David performs songs from his solo record American Utopia, a part of a larger series titled “Reasons to be Cheerful” in which the soloist inspires optimism for America into his audience. Seating is limited, so be sure to purchase your ticket soon!

Dancing Out Loud – Thursday, 8pm; Friday, 8pm – Presented by the “Big Red Dance Project,” the show will feature live vocals by an all-female a capella group, Stella, at the PSI Theatre in the Durham Arts Council building. The two pieces are led by Artistic Director Gerrie Houlihan, who created them in collaboration with Houlihan’s Sunday afternoon Community Moves class at the ADF Scripps Studios. Over the course of the last couple of years, this class’s wonderful group of movers has sparked a desire to return to choreographing. In the Big Red Dance Project, there is a neuroscientist, a former ADF box office manager and school administrator and several folks who are currently teaching dance or who have recently retired from teaching. Rounding out the evening, Durham audiences will be treated to two older works from Houlihan’s repertoire.

Strawberry Champagne – Friday, 3-7pm; Saturday, 1-6pm; Sunday, 1-5pm – Stop by Honeygirl Meadery and kick off Mother’s Day Weekend with some bubbly! Celebrate mom with a delicious strawberry cocktail; a perfect blend of strawberry mead, champagne and fresh berries only available this weekend! Get it while it lasts!

Smoke x Mirrors Trunk Show – Friday, 5pm-7pm – Enjoy a personalized day of shopping with Smoke x Mirror’s very own Maggie Eaton for their men’s and women’s Sunglasses Collection available for the first time at Vert & Vogue.

The Illusionists – Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 2pm and 8pm – Witness the impossible as five of the world’s leading illusionists and magicians make their way from Broadway to the Durham Performing Arts Center. Fans and skeptics of all ages are invited to watch these jaw-dropping acts firsthand. The five Illusionists, including The Daredevil, The Inventor and The Deductionist, will keep you on the edge of your seat all night.

Stamp Out Hunger – Saturday – Help fight hunger in our communities by participating in the largest one-day food drive in the country. The National Association of Letter Carriers will disperse plastic bags to homes for people to fill with canned food and dry goods. On Saturday, the local letter carriers will collect the bags from resident’s mailboxes and return to the post office where volunteers will distribute to the food banks at six of their branches.

World Fair Trade Day – Saturday, 10am-6pm – One World Market presents an all day extravaganza with food tastings and scavenger hunts with prizes for the kids! Shemorah Sheikh will treat everyone to free henna from noon-2pm and the Harambe Collective will amaze guests with performances at 12:30pm and 1:15pm.

Museum of Durham History Bike Ride – Saturday, 11am-1pm – Join Museum of Durham History and Bike Durham in celebrating National Bike Month by joining this family-friendly tour through downtown. Led by Ernest Dollar, a local historian and Durham native, the ride will feature a look into the cities’ more famous as well as lesser-known stories. The ride will start at the Museum of Durham History and end there as well. This event is free, but with a $20 donation you receive a Durham Histories’ T-shirt! Grab your mom and your bike and kick off Mother’s Day with a ride through town!

Bull City Squat Challenge – Saturday, 11am – The event, now in its thirdyear, will be held at The Choice Performance Center and will feature the original barbell squat challenge of maximum repetitions of 95 pounds for women and 135 pounds for men in a 3-minute time limit. The Challenge focuses on inspiring people to adopt a healthier and fit lifestyle, while raising funds to support local and national causes.

Real Durham Pop-Up Market – Saturday, noon-4pm – Stop by The Mothership and experience a unique pop-up market showcasing original products made by locally driven entrepreneurs. Browse beautifully crafted handmade items including candles, jewelry, ornaments, baked treats and other locally crafted goods! If you need last minute Mother’s Day gift ideas, look no further!

Rosé Fest – Saturday, 1pm-5pm – Come taste more than 35 samples of rosé to kick off rosé season at The Wine Feed. This refreshing pink wine made from a variety of different grapes boasts complex flavors. Grab your friends for an afternoon of yummy samplings of rosé, frosé and tasty tacos.

Cinderella – Saturday, 6:30pm; Sunday, 3pm – The Durham Ballet Theatre presents the magical tale of Cinderella, a performance that showcases sophisticated costumes with breathtaking scenery.

Silent DJ Dance Party – Saturday, 7-11pm – Party for a purpose! Join fellow partygoers at The Durham Fruit as you dance the night away to the tunes playing on your own headphones! The Silent Disco benefits the Empower Dance Foundation, a Durham based nonprofit providing scholarships to young dancers. Get your body moving to the beat of your own drum!

May Birthday Party with The Beauty Operators – Saturday, 8-11pm – The Beauty Operators lead a night of heavy dancing and blues “sanging.” These five gals plan to host the coolest rock party The Blue Note Grill has yet to see. You don’t want to miss this!

Get Rowdy! – Saturday, 8:30pm-11pm – Time to get Rowdy at the Rowdy Square Dance hosted by Five points Rounders at The Bullpen. Grab your dancing shoes and your dancing partner and show off those dance moves all under the direction of the Caller. For every draft pint purchased, The Bullpen donates $1 to Music Maker Relief Foundation to help support and sustain American roots musicians.

Mother’s Day Brunch and Champagne Celebration – Sunday, 11am-3pm – Celebrate Mother’s Day and commencement at Fairview Dining Room while enjoying masterful creations by Executive Chef Jason Cunningham. Relish in tasteful options including a seafood display, salads, carved meats, hot selections, omelets, waffles and tasty desserts. Each mother will receive a rose of appreciation and champagne.

Mother’s Day Bubbly Flight – Sunday, noon-9pm – Enjoy a relaxing Sunday with mom at The Wine Feed. Moms, take a moment to indulge in delicious sweet treats and paired bubbly wine. Tickets can be purchased in advance or the day of the event. Come with your sweet tooth and let The Wine Feed handle the rest.
