Daymé Arocena – Thursday, 8pm – The young singer, composer, and choral director and her traditional Cuban – combined with gospel and jazz – music, comes to Motorco Music Hall as a part of Duke Performances’ six-day festival celebrating the music of Africa and the diaspora, Black Atlantic.
Ruby Friday – Sculptor Stephen Hayes – Friday, noon-1pm – The local sculptor talks about his journey as an artist and his memorial to African lives taken by the Atlantic slave trade in the Ruby Lounge at the Rubenstein Arts Center.
Dia de Noquis – Friday, 5-8pm – Celebrate the Argentinian Day of the Gnocchi with Melina’s Fresh Pasta! Prices are $10 per bowl. Salads and mini cannolis will also be available.
Widespread Panic – Friday-Sunday, 7:30pm – The hit rock group performs in the Triangle for the first time. From the time of their original line-up back in 1986, the group has released 12 studio albums and 43 live albums, selling more than 3 million copies. See them live at DPAC.
‘The Mikado‘ – Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 7pm; Sunday, 2pm – The Durham Savoyards Ltd. present their portrayal of the popular Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera at The Carolina Theatre.
Dafnis Prieto Big Band – Friday, 8pm – The young jazz drummer is joined by his 17-member, star-studded band in this concert at Baldwin Auditorium for Duke Performances’ six-day festival celebrating the music of Africa and the diaspora. Produced by Duke Performances’ Eric Oberstein, Prieto’s band’s GRAMMY-winning “Back to the Sunset” includes Afro-Cuban compositions and ballads, re-imagining what a big band can be.
The Campbell Brothers – Friday, 8pm – Made up of Chuck, Phil and Darick these musicians perform on lap and pedal steel guitars as well as electric guitar and bass (and Phil’s son Carlton on drums) at Motorco Music Hall as a part of Duke Performances’ six-day festival celebrating the music of Africa and the diaspora.
Spring Plant Sale – Saturday, 8am-noon – Discover plants ideal for this region at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens semi-annual plant sale. Duke Gardens plants, trees, shrubs, vines, bulbs and air plants, as well as decorative plant pots, will be for sale. Duke Gardens’ staff, Durham County Extension Master Gardeners and regional specialty vendors will be on hand to answer any gardening questions. Profits from the plant sales help fund summer internships for aspiring horticulturists.
Women of Color Empowerment Brunch – Saturday, 9am-1pm – Explore the path to women’s empowerment in a safe environment at Sheraton Imperial Hotel. Enjoy food, music and great conversation. Durham County Commissioner Brenda Howerton will be a featured guest.
Holi Festival 2019 – Saturday, 2-5pm – Viceroy hosts this year’s festival of colors at Durham Central Park. Usher in the spring season with food and drink from Viceroy, beers from Durty Bull Brewing, live Bollywood/Bhangra music from DJ Ronak, face painting for kids and more.
Hope Animal Rescue Adoption Event and Fundraiser – Saturday, 3-6pm – Eastcut hosts adorable, adoptable puppies for an afternoon of furry fun. A dollar from every draft beer sold during the event will go to Hope Animal Rescue.
Rock the Lyceum feat. T.I. – Saturday, 5-7pm – This Rock Lyceum Lecture Series event will feature award-winning hip-hop artist, Clifford “T.I.” Harris Jr. and will be held at McDougald-McLendon Arena. The CEO of Grand Hustle Records, who has released seven top-five albums on the U.S. Billboard 200 Chart, Harris is an activist on social issues surrounding race relations and civil and human rights. Admission is free.
Chili Cookoff – Saturday, 6-8pm – Come out to Barley Labs, make a cash or check donation of at least $7 to APS of Durham to get a taste of all the entries. The tasting/voting period will run from 6-8 p.m. Votes will be tallied and a winner declared by 8:30 p.m. The winner will have his/her picture posted on the wall of fame and get a $25 gift card.
Ciompi Quartet Concert No. 2 with Susan Fancher – Saturday, 8pm – Duke Performances presents the quartet as well as the world premiere of a new piece by Duke Vice Provost for the Arts, Scott Lindroth, at Baldwin Auditorium. The piece is written for saxophonist Susan Fancher.
Danilo Brito – Saturday, 8pm – A master of choro, the first Brazilian popular music style, with its roots in Portuguese fado, featuring polka and waltz rhythms overlaid with Afro-Brazilian syncopation. He performs at Motorco Music Hall as a part of Duke Performances’ six-day festival celebrating the music of Africa and the diaspora.
Spring Patchwork Market – Sunday, noon-5pm – Head to the Durham Armory for a free, indoor market featuring more than 60 vendors selling handmade, small-batch and one-of-a-kind goods.
Duke Create Workshop: Punch Needle Rug Hooking – Sunday, 2-4pm – Participants will learn the rug punch technique to create patterned and textured works of art and craft. In this workshop, attendees will be led to produce coasters but could also make any small item of their choosing. After designing and punching the project, the design will be cut off the frame and the edges will be finished for participants to take home. Born-and-raised Durhamite Anna Wallace leads the workshop at the Duke Arts Annex.
Duke Chinese Music Ensemble – Sunday, 5pm – Directed by Jennifer Chang, the concert will feature a variety of Chinese music styles and instruments in the Nelson Music Room at Duke.
