Community Show: Rupture / Rapture / Revolution – Thursday-Sunday – The seven-year tradition of The Carrack‘s community art show continues over the next two weeks, depicting themes from climate change and Internet surveillance to student debt and Instagram robots. Come see a wide variety of art through February 9.

Toni Braxton – Thursday, 7:30pm – Seven-time Grammy-award winner Toni Braxton plays DPAC during her “As Long As I Live” tour with SWV, a R&B trio. The singer will perform her greatest hits as well as songs from her new album, “Sex & Cigarettes.”

‘Three Identical Strangers’ – Thursday, 7:30pm – Part of the Full Frame Road Show Winter Series, this film – shown at at The Carolina Theatre – delves into the mysterious separation of triplets Bobby Shafran, Eddy Galland and David Kellman. A chance encounter as teenagers led them to discover that they were related, but a more sinister side of their story was yet to be uncovered.

Jane Gabin, ‘The Paris Photo’ – Thursday, 7pm – The author reads from and signs copies from her newest book at The Regulator Bookshop. The historical fiction is set partially at the end of WWII and partially in the present, linked by a photo taken in Paris in 1945.

Woodvamp – Thursday, 8pm – Hailing from Durham and Raleigh, this minimalist independent rock band specializes in instrumental music with occasional eclectic vocals. The band is joined by Greensboro-based indie rock band Harrison Ford Mustang and Chapel Hill-based Lacy Jags at The Pinhook.

‘February One’ – Friday, 9:50am and 11:20am – The Arts Discovery Educational Series presents two showings of “February One” at The Carolina Theatre. The film shares the remarkable story of the “Greensboro Four,” who began a sit-in at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in North Carolina – considered one of the most pivotal moments in the American Civil Rights Movement.

The Bull City Robotic Rodeo – Friday-Sunday, noon-3pm – Experience the Wild West at the Durham Convention Center with mechanical bull rides, laser-pistol slinging showdowns, bull-whip workshops, saloon girl can-cans and more.

Stagville Under the Stars – Friday, 6-8pm – An evening of science and storytelling at Historic Stagville, this free event features African folktales, science demonstrations and stargazing with educators from Morehead Planetarium. A storyteller starts the evening with African folk tales about the sun, moon and stars, while educators give hands-on demonstrations about the science of the night sky. As the sun sets, head outside to see the stars with planetarium telescopes as the staff leads you through a guided star tour of the night sky. Dress for the weather. and wear sturdy walking shoes for this evening event. 

Triangle Health Innovation Challenge – Friday, 6pm-Sunday, 3pm – Engineers, clinicians, designers, business people, students and others are invited to come up with innovative solutions for today’s biggest challenges in health and health care at the Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans Center for Health Education.

Blind Beer Tasting Contest – Friday, 7:30pm – Compete in this sampling of four unknown beers at Barley Labs to become champion of beer knowledge! Winner will receive a $25 gift card and a 4- or 6-pack of your choice. If you want to “train,” the bottle shop has free beer tastings every Friday from 5-7pm to go over the basics of different styles.

Ron Miles: ‘I Am a Man’ – Friday, 8pm – Taking its name from the slogan that protesters took up during the landmark 1968 sanitation strike in Memphis, the trumpet and cornet master’s album “I Am a Man” continues the African-American tradition of using musics as a means of protest and an assertion of humanity. Presented by Duke Performances at Baldwin Auditorium, the quintet – including guitarist Bill Frisell, drummer Brian Blade, pianist Jason Moran and, for this show, bassist Scott Colley – works through compositions that wrestle with family turmoil and religious perseverance.

17th Annual NC MLK Black History Month Parade & Block Party – Saturday, 11am-4pm – Celebrate Black History Month at the NCCU Student Union Parking Lot with a DJ, step show, food trucks, bounce house, video games, vendors, exhibitors and more! Also enjoy a parade at noon that starts on Fayetteville Street (between Cornwallis and Lawson) and includes performances from marching bands, floats and step teams.

The Patchwork Market – Saturday, noon-4pm – The monthly market is back at Fullsteam with a wide variety of local makers and vintage vendors for a unique shopping experience.

NCSSM 28th Annual Powwow – Saturday, noon-5pm – Bring the family out to North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics to see American Indian dancers, musicians and artists from across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Learn about the region’s rich American Indian culture with music, dance, arts and crafts and food!

Ruby’s First Birthday – Saturday, 2-5pm – The Rubenstein Arts Center is turning 1! Celebrate its first birthday with cake, art activities, student dance workshops by Duke Swing and Sabrosura, performances by Duke a capella, theater and poetry groups, cupcake decorating, laser cutting, a piñata, a photobooth and much more!

Bull City Lip Sync Battle – Saturday, 7pm – You’ve seen lip sync battles before on TV, but now Durham’s got its own version! The Pinhook hosts this epic lip sync battle benefiting the LGBTQ Center of Durham’s trans programming.

Movie Night at Ponysaurus – Saturday, 7-10pm – Celebrate Punxsutawney Phil’s big day with a showing of the classic Bill Murray movie “Groundhog Day” and a selection of food from  Soomsoom Pita Pockets, snacks, hot mulled wine wine, beer and s’mores under the heaters on the patio of Ponysaurus Brewing.

Schumann Quartet – Saturday, 8pm – The Schumann Quartet visits Baldwin Auditorium as part of the Chamber Series at Duke Performances. The Schumann trio of brothers are joined by violinist Liisa Randalu in an impressive performance of selections from Shubert and Ives.

A Conversation with Bob Woodward – Saturday, 8pm – The two-time Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist and bestselling author – his book, “Fear: Trump in the White House,” is currently the No. 1 international bestseller – comes to DPAC to provide an inside look into the Trump presidency.

Ignition featuring D-Unity – Saturday, 10pm – Self-taught musician D-Unity has earned a spot as one of the most respected producers in the electronic dance music industry. He visits Durham Fruit & Produce Company for a night of infectious music alongside several other artists, some from Subtek Music & Techno Live Sets.

Camille A. Brown & Dancers, ‘Black Girl: Linguistic Play’ – Friday and Saturday, 8pm – Inspired by Kyra D. Gaunt’s book “The Games Black Girls Play,” Camille A. Brown brings her dancers to Reynolds Industries Theater for three duets that recall childhood relationships and explore how black girls and women “perform” to meet social expectations in this Duke Performances show.

Blueprint: Oceans + Innovation – Friday and Saturday, 6:30pm – Join students, explorers and ocean innovators for Duke’s annual sustainable tech conference at the Fitzpatrick Center. Talks will be given by experts ranging from engineering to policy, and then students will have the opportunity to brainstorm solutions to real-world marine conservation issues.

Pre-game for Our Parks – Sunday, noon-11pm – Fullsteam Brewery hosts an all-day event with brews, the Super Bowl and prizes to give away. Twenty percent of the tavern proceeds will benefit the National Park Foundation.

Oddities, Curiosities and Ephemera – Sunday, 1pm – Looking for an unusual piece of art, jewelry or furniture? Come out to Pennies for Change Thrift Store to shop an odd collection of assorted goods. Light refreshments will be served, and all proceeds benefit victims of domestic and sexual violence in Durham County.

An Exploration of Freedom: Highlights Tour – Sunday, 2-3pm – Take advantage of another installment of the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University‘s Highlights Tours. Gallery guide Maria Jimenez will take individuals or groups of 10 or fewer people on an exploration of art through the theme of “Freedom.”

Leipzig Locals – Sunday, 2-4pm – Listen to selections from Johann Sebastian Bach’s contemporaries with a Leipzig connection at First Presbyterian Church. The performance features Kathie Stewart on the baroque flute, cellist/gambist Jaap ter Linden, baroque violinist Nicholas DiEugenio and Elaine Funaro on harpsichord.

Pop-Up Valentine Make & Take – Sunday, 2-4pm – Members of Triangle Books Arts will be on hand at The Regulator Bookshop to teach participants how to craft the perfect pop-up valentine. Make some to take home, and/or donate a few valentines to the residents of Hillcrest Convalescent Center.
