‘The Faces of Poverty in North Carolina: Stories from Our Invisible Citizens’ – Thursday, 7pm – Join The Regulator Bookshop for a reading and book signing with author Gene Nichol. In his newest book, the UNC Boyd Tinsley Distinguished Professor of Law has traveled across the state to tell the stories of underprivileged people and those who are trying to turn their lives around.
The Power of Miracles – Thursday, 8pm – Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the “Miracle on the Hudson” with the American Red Cross and Duke Health at The Carolina Theatre. Listen to stories from Jeff Skiles, the co-pilot of U.S. Airways Flight 1549, as well Dave Sanderson, the last passenger off the plane, and Scott Graham, Red Cross division disaster executive. Proceeds benefit Red Cross programs and services in central North Carolina and the Triangle.
Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana – Thursday-Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 2pm and 8pm – Experience the pride, power and passion of flamenco dance at Motorco Music Hall. Critically acclaimed by The New York Times, this dance company presents a night filled with dance, singing and music in a unique, recreated cafe-style setting. ‘Bamboo Wind’ – Thursday-Sunday, 8pm – Ariail Images and ShaLeigh Dance Works present “Bamboo Wind,” an evening of dance, sculpture, photography and poetry, at Durham Fruit and Produce Co. ShaLeigh Comerford, artistic director of ShaLeigh Dance Works, says, “This, by far, has been our most ambitious project to date: 20 collaborators, 10 different mediums, an outside stimulus and bumping up against different aesthetic approaches, expectations and interpretations. As challenging as the journey has been, the rewards have been deep and remarkably abundant.” Doors open at 7pm for the exhibition, with the performance starting at 8pm.
In Conversation: Stefanie Batten Bland with Sascha Radetsky – Friday, noon – Learn about the art of ballet with the award-winning choreographer and the studio company artistic director of the American Ballet Theatre at Duke‘s Rubenstein Arts Center. The two dancers will talk about their professional careers, choreographing and directing ballet, and issues surrounding the art form’s future.

Donna Washington – Saturday, 11am – A highly animated performer, Donna Washington has been entertaining, educating and inspiring audiences with her vocal pyrotechnics, elastic face and deep characterizations that bring folklore, literary tales and personal narratives to life. She is an internationally known, multiple award-winning storyteller, spoken word recording artist and author. She performs at The Carolina Theatre during their Family Saturday Series.

2019 MLK Service – Sunday, 11am-1pm – Honor the life of one of our nation’s remarkable civil rights leaders at Watts Street Baptist Church with words from Rev. David Goatley, director of office of black church studies at Duke Divinity School. The service will be followed by lunch and a public discussion.
Renaissance Instrument Faire – Sunday, 1-2pm – Experience 13th and 14th century music at this one-hour family concert at Sarah P. Duke Gardens inside Kirby Horton Hall. Presented by Mallarmé Chambers Players, this show features artists Charles Wines and Sarah Lodico Wines, as well as the sounds of early instruments, including shawms, recorders, gamba and bagpipes. Admission is free on a first-come basis.
The Bourbon Bride Indie Wedding Show – Sunday, 2-5pm – Plan your dream wedding with talented professionals at The Cookery! This show features more than 30 local makers, artists, bakers and DJs who use their skills to create fun, down-to-earth weddings. This free event is open to everyone and is LGBTQ friendly. Tarana Burke: 2019 MLK Keynote Address – Sunday, 3pm – This 2017 Times Person of the Year and creator of the “Me Too” phrase will deliver a keynote address at Duke University‘s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ceremony at Duke Chapel. Learn about how King’s civil rights legacy connects to the struggle for justice in our modern-day society. The program will include other events and campus activities. Those who cannot attend the event can stream it on Duke’s YouTube channel.
MLK Jr. Day of Service – Monday, 8:30am-noon – North Carolina Central University hosts its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at the LeRoy T. Walker Physical Education Complex. Join 500 or more NCCU students and local residents for a day of honoring King’s life and vision through volunteering and providing assistance to the community. Activities include creating literacy tools for tutoring and mentoring programs, creating no-sew blankets for veterans and military families, making diaper kits and sleeping mats for children as well as sleeping pads for adults.
Maynard Jackson Documentary Screening – Monday, 1pm – Spend your MLK day at Durham Academy watching the screening of “Maynard,” a documentary film about the first African-American mayor. The film will be shown in Kenan Auditorium and is followed by a 2:30pm panel discussion with the documentary’s executive producers. The event is free and open to the public. Bring your children, ages 4-9, for a contemporary-based dance lesson from 1-3pm with Anjanée Bell, the daughter of Durham’s longest-tenured former mayor, Bill Bell.
Dream Big Book Drive – Monday, 1-4pm – Celebrate MLK Day with Book Harvest at its annual community event at Durham Central Park. There will be a book drive, a food truck rodeo, an activity fair and volunteer opportunities. Free books will be provided for all kids to take home!
Triangle Restaurant Week – Monday, Jan. 21-27 – Indulge in delicious cuisine through a special three-course menu at restaurants from Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill and surrounding areas.
