Kick off the new year with art exhibits, live performances and morning hikes this weekend

Songstories Live at Boxyard RTP – Thursday, 5:30-7:45pm – Singer-songwriters Jason Adamo, Josh Branch and John Sierra share their songs and the stories behind why they wrote them under the pavilion at Boxyard RTP. Vendors will be open for food, drinks and shopping to accompany the performance.
Jim McKeon: Five Points Featured Artist Exhibition – Friday, 4pm-8pm; Saturday, 1-9pm; Sunday, noon-3pm – The Durham-based artist premieres his 3D work at 5 Points Gallery this weekend. The exhibit, which runs through Feb. 5, encourages viewers to explore their own relationships and experiences with racial and gender discrimination, economic disparity and social injustice.
Wreck Your Resolution Party – Friday, 5pm-midnight – The Glass Jug Beer Lab premieres two new, limited edition beers at its downtown location, accompanied by Succotash food truck and live music from Bill West.
Harry Potter Trivia – Friday, 7pm-8:05pm – Bring a team of up to six friends to compete in Harry Potter-themed trivia at Mystic Farm and Distillery. Get a half-point bonus for dressing up in Harry Potter merch. Free tastings start at 5pm.
New Year Sunrise Hike – Saturday, 6:30am – Enjoy a peaceful, one-hour hike led by Durham Parks and Recreation at West Point on the Eno.
Yoga and Hike with Optional Sauna – Saturday, 10am-1pm – Visit Serenity Farms to take a yoga class followed by cider and tea around the firepit and a 60-minute hike on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The yoga retreat center also offers a sauna session after the hike for an additional cost.
Live Music – Andrew Rice – Saturday, 6-9pm – See the local musician in his debut performance at Tobacco Wood Brewing Company’s new Durham location.
Secret Society Showcase – Saturday, 7pm – Local theater company Mettlesome performs a show with its “secret society” – three teams of improvisors that are formed based on lottery, availability, diversity and experience – at Bull City Ciderworks.
APS Out and Unleashed – Sunday, noon-3pm – Meet adoptable cats and dogs from the Animal Protection Society of Durham at Unleashed, The Dog & Cat Store. There will also be a trivia wheel to spin for prizes.
Chunky Blanket Workshop – Sunday, 1:30pm – Learn how to hand-knit a cozy, chunky blanket that will keep you warm through the winter at Wine & Design on Hope Valley Road.
Sunday Winter Hike – Cabelands – Sunday 2-4:30pm – This moderate, 2½-hour hike led by the Eno River Association takes you through the geological and human history of Cabelands Trail.
The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle – Rejoice! – Sunday, 3pm – Join The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle as the ensemble tells the story of a love triangle among a wealthy landowner, a poet, and the poet’s love during this performance featuring works by Von Suppe, Dvorak and Beethoven at The Carolina Theatre.
Comedy Night Under the Big Top! – Sunday, 4-5:30pm – Enjoy this daytime comedy show featuring four comedians at Durty Bull Brewing Company under a heated tent.
Tell Me Something Good: A Tribute to Chaka Khan – Sunday, 6pm-7:30pm – The Black American Music Series at the Hayti Heritage Center continues with a tribute to the legendary funk/R&B/soul singer.
