Weekend at a Glance: Dogs, Dugouts and Durham 150

The Durham 150 Opening Celebration will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday underneath the Lucky Strike tower. Mayor Schewel will make remarks and officially kick off the fanfare at 10:25 a.m. The Birthday Moment, sponsored by North Carolina Central University, will be complete with confetti cannons, complimentary birthday cake, and a singalong. Durham Beer Tap Takeover – Thursday, 5-10pm – The Glass Jug Beer Lab taps a series of beers that were brewed by Durham breweries in partnership with other Durham food and beverage producers. The Glass jug has partnered with Durham Distillery, Ponysaurus has partnered with Dashi and Fullsteam has partnered with Goorsha, just to name a few of the combinations you will find on draft and available by the pint or in a tasting flight of four small pours. Fullsteam will also have all the beers on tap April 12.

Tinkering and Drinkering – Thursday, 6:30pm – The Museum of Life and Science hosts a happy hour at Motorco Music Hall with drinks and tools and technology to play with, from circuit building to fiber arts.

Durham Bulls Games – Thursday and Saturday, 6:35pm – Come out to the Durham Bulls home opener Thursday against the Columbus Clippers, and return Saturday (in conjunction with the Durham 150 celebration) to see the Bulls wear a reimagined version of the uniforms that the city’s first baseball team, the Durham Tobacconists, wore.

The Price is Right Live – Thursday, 7pm – Buy a ticket and register for a chance to become a contestant when this favorite game show comes to DPAC. By guessing the prices of different everyday items, contestants can advance to win major prizes like cars, boats or rooms full of furniture.

Wilton Barnhardt and Friends – Thursday, 7pm – The editor of Every True Pleasure: LGBTQ Tales of North Carolina, comes to The Regulator Bookshop for a reading and book signing. The book brings together authors of different genders and sexualities with a connection to North Carolina to write about their experiences with love and life.

Eyes Up Here Comedy Showcase – Thursday, 8:30pm – Laugh till you cry at The Pinhook with this all-women stand-up comedy group.

Birthday Bash at Hendrick Southpoint Auto Mall – Through April 20 – Find exceptional offers and savings on new and pre-owned vehicles with the added bonus of food trucks, cake and a kids’ bounce house to commemorate the one-year anniversary at Hendrick Southpoint

SPEIA Basketball Analytics Summit – Friday-Saturday – Join professionals and non-professionals in the areas of data science and sports for a two-day summit at North Carolina Central University. Featuring a lineup of experienced speakers in the field, this event is a great way for local professionals and students to share their passion for basketball.

New Signage for Major the Bull Sculpture – Friday, 11am – The City of Durham and Liberty Arts host the 15th anniversary celebration of the Major the Bull sculpture at CCB Plaza. The sculpture will receive new, bronze signage in English and Spanish.

Natacha Sochat Artist Talk – Friday, noon – The artist speaks about her new exhibition, “Between Presence and Absence (Making Roots)” at The Carrack. The child of immigrants and brought up between Cuba and the Bronx, the artist explores cultural uprooting through painting, crocheting and sculpture.

Community, Kids and Pioneers – Friday, 6-8pm – Head to the Museum of Durham History for three exhibits commemorating Durham’s 150th, including “150 Faces of Durham,” “Our Bull City: Exhibits from the Community” and “Durham A-Z.”

Strand of Oaks – Friday, 8pm – Taking over the stage at Motorco, Tim Showalter performs songs from his latest album, “Hard Love.” A portion of each ticket sold benefits Planned Parenthood.

Chris D’elia – Friday, 8pm – Star of NBC’s “Undateable,” podcast host and much more, the comedian comes to DPAC for a stand-up special.

The Conjure – Two-Year Anniversary Party – Friday, 10pm – The Conjure hosts a two-year anniversary dance party at The Pinhook. The Conjure is a safe dance space for black and brown femmes, trans and non-gender-conforming people of color.

The Durham 150 Opening Celebration – Saturday, 10am-2pm – The official sesquicentennial birthday party will be held at the American Tobacco Campus. The event will kick off with entertainment and Mayor Steve Schewel leading the official birthday recognition, with fanfare to follow. There will be exhibits, local experts, artists and activities to explore that are designed to inspire and entertain, plus drawings for prizes. Confirmed acts include the African American Dance Ensemble, the Bouncing Bulldogs, Empower Dance StudioJohn Dee HolemanBlackspaceCaique VidalJambalaya Soul Jam, Raven Street Dance AcademyHeart of Carolina A CapellaKidznotes and storyteller Willa Brigham. There will also be a Durham 150 photo mosaic mural, a work of art that will commemorate the year’s activities with photos of community members and those present at the opening celebration. A story kiosk will be on-site for attendees to share their own story on video and become part of Durham’s historical archives. To close celebration, there will be a “Running of the Bulls” at 1:30 p.m. Up to 2,000 interested attendees will receive a floatable rubber bull to race down the American Tobacco Campus river. The top three winning bull owners will win prize packages, and all race participants can take a bull home as a souvenir. The event is free and open to the public. 

SummerStage Block Party – Saturday, 2-9pm – Golden Belt celebrates Durham’s 150th birthday and National Record Store Day with participants from Jamla, Cardigan, Raund Haus, Merge Records, N.C. Central University and Small Town Records. The event features a hiring fair, food trucks, music, art and brews from Hi-Wire. There are nearly 100 planned free events  – from music and film to art, education and fitness events – scheduled for the inagural SummerStage season, curated by Art of Cool Project co-founder Dr. Cicely MitchellThe season runs through October.

Disrupted: Stories of Eviction and Health – Saturday, 4pm – Join a community discussion hosted by NorthStar Church of the Arts and Karla Jimenez-Magdaleno, whose photography shares stories of stories of eviction and health, to discuss Durham’s housing system. 

North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble: Luminescence – Saturday, 7:30 pm & Sunday, 3pm – Celebrate the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble’s 36th season with 44 performers and guest artist Joseph Wiggins this weekend at The Carolina Theatre

Derek Hough Live! The Tour – Saturday, 8pm – Emmy Award winner Derek Hough stops at DPAC on his first-ever solo tour. Bringing together music and dance, Derek performs a range of styles like salsa, ballroom, tap and hip-hop.

Artemis Quartet – Saturday, 8pm – Enjoy the sounds of the modern string quartet in this Duke Performances concert at Baldwin Auditorium as they perform a program of Haydn, Bartók and Brahms on their fourth visit to Durham.

Pints for Paws – Sunday, noon-4pm – This craft beverage festival, now on its second year, takes place at Durham Central Park and will benefit The Animal Protection Society of Durham. Enjoy live music by The Rusted Rails, local fare from food trucks, games, dog wading pools and more than a dozen Durham craft beverage makers at this family- and dog-friendly festival.

APS Cat Adoption Event – Sunday, 1:30-3pm – Join The Animal Protection Society of Durham at The Regulator Bookshop to meet your next perfect furry friend.

Durham Community Concert Band – Sunday, 3pm – The DCCB, which just celebrated its 35th anniversary last year, hosts its spring concert at North Carolina School of Science and Math. Open to all, no auditions required, DCCB has more than 100 musicians, from high schoolers to retirees.

Michael Carbonaro Live! – Sunday, 7pm – Magician Michael Carbonaro of truTV’s “The Carbonaro Effect” performs his mind-blowing magic on the DPAC stage.
