Bring your pups out for the annual Walk for the Animals at Duke’s East Campus on Saturday and raise money for the thousands of homeless pets that the Animal Protection Society of Durham takes care every year!

Great May Carpet Sale – Monday-Friday, 10am – 6pm; Saturday, 10am – 5pm – The Persian Carpet is having a sale of its 7,000 rugs through the month of May. Every rug in their showroom has been marked down between 30% and 75%, including antique Persian, Caucasian and Chinese rugs.

Enrichment: More Than Just a Toy! – Thursday-August 16 – Learn how professionals at Duke Lemur Center have cared for lemurs for more than 50 years during this special tour in which the animals receive welfare and mental stimulation to keep their day-to-day interesting and fun! The tour is 90 minutes long and is recommended for guests ages 8 and older. Reservation is required to attend.

The Northern Spy Grand Opening – Thursday, 4-8pm – Celebrate the official grand opening of the restaurant/bar/bottle shop with complimentary pulled pork sandwiches from Picnic, free cider floats and ice cream from The Parlour, $5 specialty draft cocktails,  a collaboration release, Hopfengraf, with Fullsteam Brewery, and a Botanist and Barrel collaboration cider, Banjo & The Bees. Help raise funds for the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle’s Backpack Buddies program, too!

Tamisha Waden – Thursday, 6:30pm – This free concert at the Down Under Patio area at American Tobacco Campus features the jazz/soul and R&B music of Tamisha Waden. Dogs, picnics, children and chairs are welcome. American Tobacco’s restaurants will be open and preparing quick-grab items for concertgoers. Beer and wine are available for purchase.

Lewis Shiner – Thursday, 7pm – The Regulator Bookshop welcomes the author of “Heroes and Villains” for a reading and signing of his new book, “Outside the Gates of Eden.” Using the music business as a window into half a century, “Outside the Gates of Eden” follows two men from their first meeting in high school to their final destination in the 21st century. From San Francisco to Woodstock, from campus protests to communes, from the Village to Austin’s outlaw country music, “Outside the Gates of Eden” charts the rise and fall of the counterculture – and what came after.

Thursdays Live on the Patio – Thursday, 7-9pm – Come to Unscripted Durham for jazz, funk and vintage pop with the Wiley Fosters.

“White” – Thursday, 7:30pm; Saturday and Sunday, 8pm; Sunday, 2pm – Bulldog Ensemble Theater presents this work by James Ijames and directed by JaMeeka Holloway-Burrell, a raucous comedy about art and identity – with a shocking twist ending – takes place at the Durham Fruit and Produce Company. It features Jordan Clifton, Monet Noelle Marshall, A.C. Donohue, Raely Qiu

“Hello, Dolly!” – Thursday, 7:30pm; Friday, 8pm; Saturday, 2pm and 8pm; Sunday, 1pm and 6:30pm – The Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival pays tribute to the original work of legendary director/choreographer Gower Champion – hailed both then and now as one of the greatest stagings in musical theater history. Led by four-time Tony Award-winning director Jerry Zaks and choreographed by Tony Award winner Warren Carlyle, the creative team behind the Broadway production reprises their roles for the national tour – hitting DPAC’s stage – of this musical comedy, which follows the story of Dolly Gallagher Levi, a matchmaker who travels to Yonkers, New York, to find a match for the “well- known unmarried half-a-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder.

Mono – Friday, 9pm – Come celebrate the 20th anniversary tour of this Tokyo-based four-piece instrumental rock band, also featuring Emma Ruth Rundle, at Motorco Music Hall.

Baay Bia Show – Friday, 10pm-midnight – Senegal’s premier griot rapper brings ancient West African storytelling traditions to the global hip-hop stage. See him tonight at Living Arts Collective.

Meet the Artist: Beth Palmer – Saturday, 9am-1pm – A unique opportunity to stop and chat with working artists in Durham at Cecy’s Gallery.

Walk for the Animals – Saturday, 9am-1pm – Take your pup for a walk along Duke University’s East Campus to help fundraise for the Animal Protection Society of Durham. Enter your pooch in contests for Best Trick, Best Dressed and more; watch K9 demonstrations by the Durham Police Department; visit some of the vendors, from doggy day cares to vets and other animal-supportive businesses; meet adoptable dogs; and more.

A Kid’s Life: Bountiful Blooms All Year Long – Saturday, 10am-noon – Try your hand at some of the ways children during the Victorian era enjoyed spring’s bountiful blooms long after the season’s end. Learn about methods of preserving flowers, and make our own wax flowers at West Point on the Eno.

The McCowan House Tour – Saturday, 10am-1pm – North Carolina Modernist, a local nonprofit focusing on documenting, preserving and promoting modernist houses, offers a special opportunity to visit the 2004 Rod McCowan House (222 Tennwood Court). This is one of the Triangle’s largest and most exciting modernist houses, located on the Treyburn Golf Course. The product of three of the area’s best design minds, architect Frank Harmon designed the exterior. Vinny Petrarca and Charles Holden designed the interior of the project. Built by Petrarca’s Tonic Construction and Sigmon Construction. Restoration work done in later years by Ellen Cassilly. The home features six bedrooms, 6,905 square feet, four full bathrooms, one half bath.

Annual Memorial Day Remembrance: The American Soldier Through the Ages – Saturday, 10am-4pm; Sunday, 10am-3pm – Join military historians, who’ll be representing the American soldier across all time periods throughout the nation’s history, in honoring fallen soldiers at Bennett Place State Historic Site.

ACC Baseball FanFest – Saturday, noon-5pm – This family-friendly, free event at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park features live music, interactive games, student-athlete autographs, giveaways, sampling and more!

2nd Annual Dunaway Classic Hoop’n for Leukemia – Saturday, noon-5pm – Held at Jordan High School in honor of Timothy Dunaway Jr., who passed away after battling leukemia in 2010 and hosted by the Humbled Initiative Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to high school students in various communities. 

Freelance Memorial Weekend Kickback – Saturday, 6pm – Sol Kitchen & Friends present Freelance performing live at Golden Belt Campus.

‘Hey Google!’ by Maura Garcia Dance – Saturday, 7-9pm – An immersive experience, complete with an informal participatory workshop followed by Maura’s performance of “Hey Google!”– an experimental dance done with a Google Home Mini smart speaker – at The Carrack Modern Art.

Home Brewed – Sunday, 3-6pm – The CNOTE Foundation brings together some of the most talented hip-hop, soul and jazz artists in the city and the state to this event at Durty Bull Brewing Company. A hundred percent of the proceeds go to scholarship endowments at historically black colleges and/or universities. In addition to live music, there will be a DJ, live digital art, cabaret performances, interactive plating art and a live artist doing body painting.
