
Sky Watching at Jordan Lake – Thursday, 8:30-10:30pm – Catch a glimpse of the Perseid Meteor Shower at a Morehead Planetarium sky watching session. Telescopes will be set up at Jordan Lake’s Ebenezer Church Recreation Area. Bring a flashlight, turn off your smartphone and prepare to be amazed by nature’s wonders.
Christopher the Conquered – Thursday, 8pm – The Iowa singer-songwriter’s debut album, “I’m Giving Up on Rock & Roll” was released this year. He performs at Motorco Music Hall. Doors open at 7pm.
Science at Sunset – Friday, 5-8pm – Celebrate 70 years of the Museum of Life and Science with live music, food trucks and kids craft activities. Kids and adults will have access to the Magic Wings Butterfly House, Dinosaur Trail and fossil dig.
Teen Lock-In – Friday, 7pm to Saturday, 7am – Teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 are invited for one last hurrah before school starts. The event kicks off with a pool party at Edison Johnson Aquatic Center and continues with pizza, music, games, guest speakers and a movie at the Walltown Park Recreation Center.
Summer of 69: No Apostrophe – Friday, 8pm – Don’t miss award-winning comedians Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally at Durham Performing Arts Center. The husband-and-wife duo are well-known for their portrayal of Ron and Tammy 2 in “Parks and Recreation.”
Thunderdome – Friday, 8pm and Saturday, 8pm – Teams will compete for your laughter at this improvised comedy show at Common Ground Theatre.
Lockdown Blues Band – Friday, 8pm and 10pm – Shake up your weekend with a high-energy blues band at Beyu Caffé. The group from the Raleigh/Durham area formed in 2008.
Juliette Lewis – Friday, 9pm – Performing at Motorco Music Hall, Juliette’s music fuses pop, blues, disco and hard rock. Doors open at 8pm.
The Phantom Playboys – Friday, 9pm – Throwback to a bygone era with ’50s rock ’n’ roll during a free show at The Blue Note Grill.
Slow Art Tour – Saturday, 11am – Soak in a single work of art, one at a time, at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. This tour will feature a discussion of Burk Uzzle’s “Clear Cut Church.”
Pooch Plunge – Saturday, 11am-2pm – Bring your dog and the both of you can take a dip in the Hillside Pool. All ages – pooches or otherwise – are welcome.
Baseball Card Family Day – Saturday, 2-5:30pm – An afternoon full of food trucks, live music and baseball-related activities, you don’t want to miss this party at the Museum of Durham History prior to the evening’s Durham Bulls game. While there, be sure to check out the “Durham and The Rise of the Baseball Card” exhibit, which closes in early September.
Artist’s Talk – Saturday, 2:30pm – Born and raised in Brazil, Ely Urbanski creates monoprints of donated clothing on fabric. Her first solo show, “hu.man.kind.,” is on display at The Carrack through Saturday.
Sister Cities Durham and the Wide World of Sports – Saturday, 3-4:30pm – Join in on a discussion about the Durham Bulls’ international connections. Baseball, cricket, hockey, basketball and skiing are a few of the sports played in Durham’s sister cities. Find out more during the event at the Durham County Main Library.
The Willie Painter Band and The Doug Prescott Band – Saturday, 7:30pm – Whether you like blues, jazz, rock or Americana, this performance at The Blue Note Grill will have something for you.
Night Paddle – Saturday, 7:45pm – Check out the night sky and the sounds of wildlife as you paddle along the Eno River. Pre-registration is required for this event at West Point on the Eno, sponsored by the Eno River Association.
Lyle Lovett and his Large Band – Saturday, 8pm – Grammy Award-winning Texas singer-songwriter performs at the Durham Performing Arts Center.
Dee Lucas – Saturday, 8pm and 10pm – The national recording artist was a runner-up in the 2007 Capital Jazz Festival Competition. Here’s your chance to listen to his smooth jazz tunes at Beyu Caffé.
North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival – Saturday through Aug. 20 – Offering a worldwide glimpse into the lives of people in today’s LGBTQ community, this film festival held at The Carolina Theatre attracts thousands of patrons yearly.
Open Farm and Market – Sunday, noon-4pm – Take a break from city life to relax and sip on lemonade at Blue Whistler Farm. Pasture-raised meat and farm eggs will be available for purchase as well as pastries from BlueBird Bakery.
Cat Adoption Event – Sunday, 2-3:30pm – The Animal Protection Society of Durham hosts a monthly opportunity to meet furry felines at The Regulator Bookshop.
Second Sunday Sewing – Sunday, 2-6pm – Meet up with other sewing aficionados at The Scrap Exchange to work on new or old projects. Sewing machines will be available for use, but materials are not included.
All-American Cookout – Sunday, 6pm – Come out to Boheme for some delicious food (handmade gourmet burgers and homemade potato salad) and visit with some precious dogs available for adoption by the Orange County Animal Shelter. Food will be served from 6-8pm, The Hill Country Cosmopolitans will play from 6-9pm and craft beers and cocktails will be available from 6pm until close.
SUMAC – Sunday, 8pm – Formed in 2014, SUMAC, composed of Aaron Turner and Nick Yacyshyn, plays at The Pinhook.
