Most people don’t give Hungarian wine a second thought. If they are familiar with them at all, it has to do with a sweet wine that has been the nectar of kings for centuries! It’s called Tokaji, and this celebrated wine runs the gamut from lightly sweet to an absolute nectar known as “Essencia.” But today, the grape responsible for this delicacy (Furmint) is also being vinified dry, (Hungarian word for the day: “száraz”) and makes an excellent table wine. I strongly recommend this unusually fragrant and individual drink. Surprise your friends, frustrate your enemies!
2015 Mandolas Tokaji Dry, Oremus $25 srp
Straw-yellow with green flecks. Light melony and tart apple nose, with spicy orange peel overtones. Altogether exotic! The body is light in weight, but loaded with mouth cleansing, clove-studded pear and quince. Very refreshing and zesty with a persistent citric finish. Orange chicken, leek-roasted salmon or all manner of curries will love this. Drink now-2019.
