HopeValleyBottleShop_BannerSPECmormoreto_front_2011_440_600Ornellaia and Sassicaia, those tongue-twisting “super-Tuscans,” remain great investment wines; wines that use a mix of Bordeaux grapes in Italy to produce “First Growths” of the south! But another member of this exalted club deserves your undivided attention. With a centuries-old tradition, Frescobaldi now divides its production into six distinct regions. From the Tenuta Di Castiglioni (southwest of Florence), Frescobaldi makes their flagship blend, Mormoreto. (64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot) With a vineyard planted in 1976, this is really showing its fabulous evolution. It belongs on any serious wine lover’s list because of its astounding quality and, vis-à-vis its compatriots, its relatively low price. Look for the 2011 vintage – what a joy!

2011 Mormoreto, Toscana, Marchesi de Frescobaldi $44 srp

A dense, dark purple color. A supple, flowery still concentrated nose suggesting cassis, black raspberry, graphite, leather, vanilla and smoke. (Reminiscent of a great Graves from Bordeaux.) Full-bodied in the mouth with soft mulberry and sweet cherry flavors; it has a powerful finish with chocolatey highlights, structured tannins and a distinct lift and acidity that’s all Italian! Uncork at least two hours before serving. A terrific wine, pumping on all cylinders. Drink now-2023.
