HopeValleyBottleShop_BannerSPECScan 1The term “American Viticultural Area” (AVA) speaks volumes in wine circles. Our very own Yadkin Valley is a recognized AVA. In Washington, one AVA that stands very tall indeed is Horse Heaven Hills. This arid, southeastern region in the state has been producing stellar grapes for decades. One of the small, boutique estates that overlooks the Columbia River is Alexandria Nicole Cellars. Its small production makes it relatively new to North Carolina. But today’s single vineyard, “Bordeaux blend” of six grape varieties will show you the potential of this remarkable region.

2013 Alexandria Nicole Cellars,“Quarry Butte,” Destiny Ridge Vineyards $25 srp

Deep reddish-garnet color. Voluminous fruit — blackberry and blackcurrant with mint and vanilla elements explode onto the sinuses — are solid, smoky and penetrating. Flavors are chunky and saturated yet lithe and balanced. There’s a refreshing core of spicy black cherry, pomegranate and chocolatey elements ending with herbal and savory notes. A trifle hot but very satisfying. Grilled foods will love it! (56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 6% Malbec, 4% Syrah and 2% Petit Verdot aged for 20 months in new and two-year-old French barrels.)
