Each week, we share – through pictures – what the folks behind Durham Mag have been doing around town. We’re always out and about, just because we love this place; we hope you’ll comment with what you’ve been doing, too!
It was a great week for the staff here – we did a lot of hard work on our February/March issue, but we also got to play a bit, too! Assistant Editor Jessica Stringer grabbed dinner from Toastand dessert from The Cupcake Baron an excursion to downtown with a friend. Associate Editor Amanda MacLaren spent Saturday evening watching the football playoffs at Oval Park Grille, one of her favorite neighborhood spots. VP of Content Andrea Griffith Cash was all over Durham – from a cooking class at Durham Spirits Company to doing a little shopping at The Makery. She even took over the airwaves on on Durham Public Television‘s City Life! And our whole company started the year off on the right foot by volunteering our time at the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
Through our Taste events (tickets on sale now at tastetheevent.com!), we support the Durham branch of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. We donate a portion of our proceeds. But last week, we contributed in a different way. Our whole staff volunteered at the Food Bank, boxing canned goods and sorting and bagging potatoes. It was a great way to kick off the year.
Believe it or not, sorting a mountain of potatoes can be fun! Especially when you’ve got ’90s tunes to jam to.
Nothing like Toast for dinner to warm up on a chilly Durham night! Assistant Editor Jessica Stringer had a delicious chicken panini, but had to snap a photo of this colorful crostini combo her friend ate.
Have you seen VP of Content Andrea Griffith Cash on Durham Public Television’s “CityLife,” where she discusses issues of Durham Magazine? She taped two spots last week!
Andrea and her husband took a French-themed couples’ cooking class at Durham Spirits Company. Andrea’s not known for her cooking, so this was a bit of a rare sight. Here she is working on crepes Suzette. They also made gougeres, pate, goat cheese soufflés, warm leeks, butter-roasted mushrooms, leg of lamb and chateaubriand potatoes.
Durham Magazine’s Sales Marketing Manager Ellen Farber had Rick Fisher take professional portrait shots of her dachshund, Trixie. He’s currently offering a deal to the first 20 customers who ask for it: $99 for an 11-by-17 print, and he’ll donate every penny to the Animal Protection Society of Durham. You can also purchase additional pictures and that money will also be donated to APS.
After dinner at Toast, Jessica had just enough room for two tiny cupcakes (Mexican Chocolate and Mint Chocolate) from The Cupcake Bar.
Check it out! Our Cooking Class with Phoebe Lawless at The Kitchen Specialist happening on Thursday made Sunday’s News & Observer! There’s still time to get tickets at tastetheevent.com. And while you are there, check out our food events coming up in February, March and April – from an indoor tailgate for Valentine’s Day to our Grand Taste Experience.
Here’s Durham Spirits Company owner Katie Coleman guiding the group on the leg of lamb.
Football season may be winding down, but you can still find Associate Editor Amanda MacLaren at Oval Park Grille’s bar with a Foothills Hoppyum in front of her and basketball on the big screens!
The ceramics at The Makery by Anna Wallace, a Durham native, are beyond adorable.
While at Durham Spirits, Andrea spotted this familiar piece of artwork on the walls!
