Each week, we share – through pictures – what the folks behind Durham Mag have been doing around town. We’re always out and about, just because we love this place; we hope you’ll comment with what you’ve been doing, too!
Duke Chapel
Associate Editor Amanda MacLaren took a tour of the restoration project at Duke Chapel on Thursday. The 80-year-old chapel has been closed since May, but the project is actually running ahead of schedule and should be open in time for commencement this coming May.
Saltbox Seafood Joint
Creative Director Kevin Brown found a break in the rainy weather this weekend, long enough to grab scallops, flounder and crab grits from Saltbox Seafood Joint.
Bennett Pointe Grill
Account Executive Flann McKinnon started her weekend off with Dixie chicken and grits and a glass of wine at Bennett Pointe Grill & Bar.
Lucia Bar Italiano

Then on Saturday, Flann tried out Durham’s newest Italian spot, Lucia, on Main Street in the former Pop’s location. We’re loving the looks of that Bianco pizza and pappardelle with wild boar ragu!
Oktoberfest at Motorco
Despite the soggy weather, the Great Big Dtown Oktoberfest at Motorco was a huge hit. Lederhosen- and drindl-clad men and women filled the performance venue, which was decked out like a traditional beer hall. Oompah party music from The Little German Band played into the night, accompanied by traditional dancers. Plenty of Pauline beer from Munich was served in steins, and Parts & Labor also served a full German beer hall menu with pretzels, spaetzle, brats and more.
Basan
For a quick, satisfying meal before a show in Durham, think Basan‘s sushi menu.
‘Beautiful’ at DPAC
Did you know that Abby Mueller plays Carole King in the production of “Beautiful” now at DPAC? She’s the sister of Jessie Mueller, who won a Tony for the part.
Aloft Hotel
Before the DPAC show, VP of Content Andrea Griffith Cash had a drink at the newly opened Aloft!
