Each week, we share – through pictures – what the folks behind Durham Mag have been doing around town. We’re always out and about, just because we love this place; we hope you’ll comment with what you’ve been doing, too!
Durham Distillery
Senior Associate Editor Amanda MacLaren and her boyfriend, Evan, were proud to be one of the first to sample (and purchase!) Durham Distillery‘s Conniption gins and liqueurs at its launch celebration on Oct. 1 — the day a new law allowing distilleries to sell one bottle of alcohol to a person per year went into effect.
Counting House Underground Cocktail Series
At the launch party, Durham Distillery was also promoting this new pop-up cocktail series at Counting House in 21c Durham. The Oct. 16 event features the distillery’s gin!
Mad Hatter’s
Amanda couldn’t resist this Mad Hatter’s special of the day, a Mediterranean veggie quesadilla, during a working lunch last week.
Johnson Family BBQ
Creative Director Kevin Brown can’t get enough of these hearty helpings of barbecue, fried chicken, collards, baked beans and mac and cheese from Johnson Family BBQ.
Sara Foster
While picking up pies at Foster’s Market, Administrative and Operations Assistant Caroline Kornegay spied a copy of our September Foodie issue turned to the story on Sara Foster and her new cookbook commemorating the 25th anniversary of the market.
Foster’s Market pies
Speaking of those pies, don’t they look absolutely decadent? We got apple and peanut butter chocolate for a shower celebrating Senior VP Rory Kelly Gillis‘ baby girl.
Spartacus
Did you know that, in addition to their lunch menu, Spartacus offers an affordable Greek buffet Monday through Saturday, plus a grand buffet on Sundays, which includes extra items like pizza, shrimp and desserts. Fall is the perfect time to take advantage of the mild weather on their patio, too!
LGBTQ Center of Durham
After their ribbon-cutting event last Wednesday, the board members at the LGBTQ Center of Durham hosted a grand opening party on Friday at the center’s new location on Hunt Street, just a few blocks down from Durham Central Park.
Heavenly Buffaloes
By far the best choice for wings during Monday Night Football? Or any night, for that matter? Heavenly Buffaloes. The little shack on Markham churns out bone-in, boneless and even vegan wings with lightning speed six days a week!
World Beer Festival
Cheers to local beer! Durham’s breweries were well represented at Saturday’s World Beer Festival held at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
NanaTaco
After two hours at the World Beer Festival, Assistant Editor Jessica Stringer and her friends refueled with NanaTaco. Nothing hits the spot like fish tacos.
Great Big Canvas
With 25,500 square feet added to its facility, Great Big Canvas had lots to celebrate! Account Executive Flann McKinnon and other guests enjoyed food and drinks from Foster’s Market and Fullsteam while perusing the company’s new art gallery, which featured works by Durham artist Rachel Campbell.
Parker & Otis
For brunch on Sundays, Amanda’s started frequenting Parker & Otis for their open-faced egg sandwich (she gets her eggs poached) and Sunday special of cheesy grits!
