Each week, we share – through pictures – what the folks behind Durham Mag have been doing around town. We’re always out and about, just because we love this place; we hope you’ll comment with what you’ve been doing, too!
Grand Taste Experience
Just a couple bites from our Grand Taste Experience last Thursday! Oval Park Grille Chef Todd Whitney‘s Woodfruit Farm mushroom crostini with spring onion marmalade, pickled quail egg and crispy Johnston County ham (left) and Chef Tim Lyons of Primal Food & Spirits‘ Thai salad with grilled octopus, marinated beef and green papaya.
Local Yogurt
Associate Editor Amanda MacLaren took a break Friday afternoon to listen to the sounds of Art of Cool Festival jazz bands out on the lawn at Durham Central Park. Several food trucks were out, but the warm sun made the choice of Local Yogurt an easy one. A lover of the chocolate-strawberry combo, Amanda chose chocolate frozen yogurt as her base and topped it off with fresh strawberries and Reese’s peanut butter cups.
Foggy Ridge Cocktails
Assistant Editor Jessica Stringer with a Dugspur Try Cocktail by Six Plates‘ Mattie Beason at Friday’s Taste 2015 Cider Dinner. A blend of Foggy Ridge Pippin Gold Cider, Byrrh, Crude Bitters Cucumber Shrub and soda water, Jessica chose to top hers off with Crude Bitters’ “Bitterless Marriage” Bitters, a blend of lavender, hibiscus and oak.
Chef Ricky Moore
Saltbox Seafood Joint‘s Chef Ricky Moore throwing a few of his shawarma-spiced beef tenders on the grill at Friday’s Foggy Ridge Cider Dinner. Guests enjoyed the finished product with tomato jam, charred onions and spring peas for the third course.
Burger Smashdown Winners
The team from Tyler’s Taproom took home the Judges’ Choice award at Saturday’s Burger Smashdown for their Old West Burger with cheddar, bourbon barbecue sauce, onion strings, smoked bacon and smoked garlic aioli, which was served with their famous garlic fries.
Burger Smashdown Winners
Mayor Bill Bell and his granddaughter, Aslan, with Burger Smashdown’s People’s Choice winners, Only Burger.
Durham Bulls
The Bulls got rained out on Saturday, but VP of Content Andrea Griffith Cash‘s nephew still got to hang with Wool E. Bull for a bit!
Chalk Art for Cocktail Dinner
We love Marika Wendelken‘s work!
Dashi
Amanda had a friend from college come to visit on Saturday, so a celebratory trip to Dashi was in order! Amanda went with the Shio ramen bowl (pictured) while her friends split the sashimi plate and smoked octopus & kombu salad.
Counting House
After dinner, Amanda and her friends trekked down to Counting House at the 21c Museum Hotel for a drink. The art-filled restaurant has many captivating pieces, like Spoonfall, in which water cascades down these clear, acrylic spoons.
Haw River Hocketts
The perfect band for Taste 2015’s Roots of North Carolina dinner at Watts Grocery!
Ninth Street Flowers
This Ninth Street Flowers bouquet from Taste 2015’s Artisan Cocktail Dinner fits in nicely with Andrea’s living room decor.
