Many of you are familiar with the bargain rosé produced by Mulderbosch Vineyards of South Africa. But among their other releases is a fascinating red that always receives lavish praise whenever I serve it to friends. Built on a Bordeaux model blend, “Faithful Hound” is sometimes criticized for being made by the book, and being too “correct” in its final outcome. Would that all reds could be this correct!

Dark brick red in color with brown hints. With satisfying depth on the bouquet, it’s a cushioned amalgam of plum, blackberry and mulberry with an enticing, smokey backdrop. Reminiscent of a first-rate Bordeaux from the Graves region, there’s a lushness on the nose that is impressive and inviting. Flavors are medium-bodied and smooth with enough acidity for refreshment. This is solid rather than overly complex, but its berry compote, chocolate and a leathery twist proves warm and long. (32% Cabernet Franc, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 16% Malbec and 7% Petit Verdot.) Drink now-2020.
