Verdicchio is a pretty well-known Italian white, but when was the last time you drank one? Many remember the green “fish bottle” that contained a Verdicchio from Fazi-Battaglia. This was a blessing and a curse because the bottle was cute but the wine not always. The Garofoli estate has been making Verdicchio for five generations. Their reserve (“Podium”) is an imposing wine that needs extensive bottle age to reveal an almost Burgundian depth. But today I’d like to talk about their “regular” 2017 Macrina bottling. I think you’ll fall in love all over again with this delectably mellow white, and your fresh fish dinner will thank you!
2017 Verdicchio Macrina, Garofoli $14 srp
Light greenish gold in color. Fresh spicy apple bursts on the bouquet. Pear, too, and a touch of lemon, but the general impression is of an orchard. Flavors are soft and “tender” on the palate; very clean but not tart nor too acidic. It kind of floats on the tongue – like sailing on calm water. Absolutely delicious with or without food. Try with grouper, veal scaloppini or a summer pasta salad without vinegar. Drink now-2019.
