Mellow Merlot

image_1174784_fullRodney Strong Vineyards runs the gamut in price structure. It has been a joy to see their more exclusive wines, such as the “Alexander’s Crown” reserve red return to the pinnacle ofquality achievements. But what about their more “everyday” wines? Tome, their Sonoma County Merlot, especially in a good vintage, provides the kind of quality that other countries dream of at this price point. 2012 was a superior year in Sonoma, and today’s red will fill a niche for people who don’t have excessive finances, nor social with admitting that they enjoy Merlot! (It remains a superlative grape when handled correctly.)

2012 Merlot, Rodney Strong Vineyards, Sonoma County $20 srp*

Garnet to dark ruby in color. An overt, welcoming nose of blueberry and plum with hints of mushroom, saddle leather, fresh herbs and toffee. The mouthfeel is redolent of black cherry and dark berries in a bold, structured style that avoids jamminess. Notes of licorice and spice with medium acidity make for a smooth yet focused mouthfeel. Enjoy with red meats, an aged gouda or mushroom-based rice/risotto. Drink now-2018.

88/100 points

*Can sometimes be found for as little as $13.
