Lively Rosé From the Rocky North of Greece

img_2730Today’s wine is a first for me, but it won’t be the last! In the Amyndeon Appellation of northwestern Greece, Kir-Yianni Winery produces a rosé from the Xinomavro grape. If any of you are familiar with the wines of the Boutari estate, especially their Grande Reserve Naoussa, then you know how very good this grape can be. In the sub-region of Agios Panteleimon, rosé wine is king. Born in mountainous, 700-meter-high terrain, this wine is a wonderful surprise among the sea of so-so rosés floating about the world today.

2015 Akakies, Kir-Yianni $16 srp

Brilliant pink, leaning towards red, color. A garden-fresh nose of strawberry and watermelon – about as lively as a rosé can get! Flavors are chewy with good body and a satiny-smooth texture. It’s a wonderfully balanced ripe fruit bowl with a touch of residual sugar. This super sipper has plenty of life-giving acidity to keep it alive and thirst quenching. Perfect for roasted poultry, tuna steaks or Cantonese cooking. Drink now-2017.
