By now you might be clued in to Funny Girl Farm. Owned by the Abrams family, it sits on 180 acres of land off Erwin Road near the Orange County boarder. They’ve got bok choy, swiss chard, herbs, beets, radishes … the list goes on and on. Also, 1,400 shitake mushroom logs and more 600 laying hens live on the farm. The guardians of these hens are two adorably huge, white, Great Pyrenees pups named Phoebe and Filbert. If you’re driving on 15-501, make a detour sometime and drive down Mt. Moriah – look for the charming roadside farm stand where you’ll find farm fresh veggies and eggs as well as local meats, cheeses and hand pies from East Durham Pie Co. As Funny Girl Farm grows, the farmers hope to provide educational programming for the community. Tara Lawson is the visionary behind the development. Her passion lies in agriculture education, which she supplies for local school groups, the homeschool community and those who just want let their preschooler loose to play and get their hands dirty on the farm. Educating on farm life, ecosystems and food is the main focus of these programs.
Their kickoff to this new venture began with a story time on March 15. It was quite cold, but sunny, so a perfect day for stories and songs on a farm. Tara read four books and sang three songs, and took great effort in coming up with new, suitable, farm-themed words to some of our most beloved tunes. We, of course, sang “Old MacDonald Had A Farm.” There was also “Take Me Out to the Farm” sung to the tune of – you guessed it – “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” My personal favorite was “Roll, Roll, Roll Around” to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”: “Roll, roll, roll around, in the mud all day. This is what the pigs all do, what a way to play!” Mark your calendars for the next story time on Wednesday, March 29, 2-2:30pm. It’s looking like a perfect spring day!
Here’s what Funny Girl Farm needs from you: We all love to be outside, yes? Kids love to get dirty, yes? Funny Girl Farm is considering additional educational programming centered on farming, food and ecology for children of a wide variety of ages. Getting down and dirty is the name of the game for young ones. They invite parents, caregivers and teachers to take a brief survey to provide feedback about the age ranges and types of programming that would be of interest of you. If there are times that would work best for the ages of your children, put it in the additional comments section of the survey.
Friends, Funny Girl Farm is awesome. Funny Girl Farm has beautiful food. Funny Girl Farm hosts rocking story times. Literally – our reading circle was outlined with big rocks! Funny Girl Farm wants to get your kids outside and have fun while learning. Funny Girl Farm is just fun to say.
