Around $5,000 raised was raised at a fundraising event at the American Tobacco Campus to help support summer soccer programming for Durham youth.
The event was held at the Cage, featuring kids’ games and a raffle supplied by local businesses. Notable attendees included Mayor Steve Schewel and Superior Court Judge Michael O’Foghludha.
The funds will help support an indoor youth futsal camp this July, organized by community startup Atlético Durham. Futsal is similar to soccer, but played on a smaller, hard court with a smaller ball.
At the event, Mayor Schewel spoke about the need for accessible athletic facilities and the plans for a new park in East Durham near Hoover Road.
Founded by David Fellerath and Kosta Harlan, Durham Atletico’s goal is to improve low-cost opportunities for soccer in the Bull City. The Durham Atlético Futsal Academy will run July 2 to 26 at C.C. Spaulding Elementary School. Registration is still open, and more information can be found on their website.
Tax-exempt donations are still being accepted through Durham Atlético’s nonprofit fiscal partner, Durham Parks Foundation.
